- One of my Dad's coworkers at Ford gave him a few of these Ford Motorsport dash emblems in 1985. He put one on his toolbox and gave the rest to me. I decided to finally use one, and added it to the '86 notchback project about five years ago. The emblem was first used on early 80's Enduro Mustangs. The same design was used on patches and pins too (see photos). All three were sold in the Ford Motorsport Sportswear and Accessories catalog. The design was also modified for use on Ford Motorsport oil caps and dipsticks sold in the Ford Motorsport Performance Equipment catalog, as well as various packaging. - I've posted before that some of my favorite Fox interior parts are the unique leather ones found on the 1984-1986 Mustang SVO. My '86 notchback project has a SVO leather steering wheel, horn pad, emergency brake handle and "Hurst" embossed shifter boot. I recently posted about adding the unique shift knob from an '83-'84 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Last fall, I was fortunate to find an '86 SVO in a local salvage yard. Amazingly enough, it still had all the unique leather interior pieces. Ford used Loctite on SVO shift knobs from the factory. So, I had to unbolt the boot and turn it inside out to remove the handle from the Hurst shifter. The handle is unique to an SVO too. It uses a jam nut on the bottom of the knob to lock it in place and also to hold the boot against the knob. An SVO shifter handle uses a different thread than a standard T5 handle too. Plus, a little known fact, is that there were two different shifter handles and two different leather boots. 1984-1985 used a longer handle (see last photo), and therefore a taller shifter boot. 1985.5-1986 used a shorter handle and boot. However, all Mustang SVO's used the same Hurst shifter. Another unique feature is the rubber insulator that goes under the shifter boot. It's designed to support the boot so it's puffed out and doesn't sag. While these pieces are rare now, you don't often find both together. I finally got around to removing the knob from the handle to separate everything recently. Fortunately, the "Hurst" shifter boot is in excellent condition. The same can't be said about the knob. It surprises me that it's in such horrible condition and the boot is so nice. Anyway, with a little leather conditioner, the boot cleaned up well and looks fantastic. - I stumbled upon a parts stash last fall. The original owner of a 1986 5.0 liter Mustang LX notchback started converting it to a drag racing car with only a few hundred miles on it. One of the first parts to be removed was the console. I haven't seen one in this condition since the cars were new when I was a kid. The bracket and original hardware were inside too. Well, it's been "under construction" and on jack stands for the last few years. It's actually the nicer of my two current Mustangs. It's my "day two", "Ford Motorsport catalog car", and at this point it has 211 parts from the Ford Motorsport/Ford Racing Performance Equipment catalogs. - This was given to me recently. It's NOS. Many people remove them from their rear axles, but it was put there for a reason, so I'm keeping it. I had a strange clunking on the '86 notchback project. It took me awhile to figure out that the rubber bushings were deteriorated and the vibration dampener was bouncing up and down. The Mustang "GT" was originally going to be called Mustang "SS". Notice that the car in the photo does not have the customary '82 GT hood scoop and the molding is body color with a thin black stripe. Ford also used this early car in the 1982 Mustang brochure (2nd photo). - I've always been interested in the subtle changes and nuances on different year Mustangs. Especially on the 1979-1986 foureyed Fox chassis cars. There were many changes, upgrades and improvements to the interiors. An interesting one is the info center and clock panel in the console. The design and graphics were changed a few times from '79-'86. I've always thought that the info center was hideous. At least Ford could have made the diagram of the car look like a Mustang instead of a Pinto, Escort or Tempo. I much prefer the switches in an '84-'86 Mustang SVO. I installed an SVO panel in the '86 Notchback Project and a Ford Motorsport Performance Timer in my '86 GT to eliminate the ugly info center. Here are a few cars I didn't have enough pictures of to justify individual posts. 1-2) 1982-'86 Pontiac Parisienne and an '86 Ford LTD, unfortunately the Ford seems to have sat for a long time, and has a small tree resting on it. 3-4) 1987 Chevrolet G20 looking sweet with side pipes, louvers, and killer wheels. (It cannot be stated enough how cool I find this van) 5-6) 1987-91 Isuzu Trooper, this is one of 2 troopers I've seen frequently in my local area, the other being an earlier model with the round headlights. 7) 1995 GMC Sonoma, I love this truck it just oozes '90s style with the factory teal paint and decals. 8-10) 1971 Plymouth Fury II, this car is rotting away parked between two old dump trucks, which is a real shame since the body looks great!!
