Working on three large scale projects at the same time for the one client was challenging yet rewarding; as it meant Munchkin&Belle was in charge of all this home's furniture upgrades 😻 Tallboys, a bookshelf, bedside tables and a buffet in some of the most beautiful colours was an absolute dream. Was always hoping to paint with them !! The baguette bag and the gator hide that *almost* broke me 😅 I have spent weeks working on this tiny little thing. Had to set it aside quite a few times and come back to it with fresh eyes. But I love it! I’ll be releasing a few different bags in his style in the coming weeks. It’s the perfect bag for spring! This is part of a larger custom order with customer supplied hides. This vintage solid birch nightstand was a fun little makeover project! I used CMP vintage duck egg for the body. I used no pain gel stain in walnut for a color boost on the drawer. I knew I wanted a fun pattern on the back panel. This was easily achieved with cotton, silk paint in the color Anchor and the belles & Whistles stencil called "patterns." The table had previously been painted yellow. Sanded the paint off and wiped on two coats of Au Natural Voodoo stain with a sponge, working in the direction of the wood grain. Voodoo stain dries in 15 mins! Recently I was lucky enough to work on a set of 4 chairs for a lovely client {Swipe across to see the before} My lovely client wanted them to match a beautiful old drinks cabinet I did for her. I gave them all a really good clean with Fusion TSP alternative, sanded them back with 120 grit sandpaper and then painted the chair pads with Fusion Ash. Then applied a mix of Stain and Finish Oil - Driftwood and Ash. Anchor Silk! This paint sprays like a dream! 1.5 oz water to 16 oz of paint works great in my spray gun. For either brushing or spraying Silk, proper prep is going to give you the best, durable Silk finish! To prep: clean with DB White Lightning or a good cleaner/degreaser of your choice. Rinse all cleaner off. Be sure to get those details and crevasses as best as possible. Then scuff sand with about a 120 sand paper. Not trying to remove finish, just scuffing well. Wipe down all dust with tack cloth or damp clean cloth. If surface is extra slick or you can’t sand, 2 coats of Slick Stick can take the place of sanding. Allow 2 hrs to fully dry between coats. The built in stain blocking primer in each coat is like one coat of BOSS primer. If you have something that bleeds heavily, you may still want a coat of stain blocking primer first, but Silk has some built in, so unless it is extreme, not needed. Allow paint to cure 28 days for full durability. Dries with an eggshell type finish. My customer wants a satin finish, so I’m adding Extra Coat(aka Gator Hide). But, Silk is super durable without a sealer once cured. When painting with a brush, don’t overwork and lay off each area with long smooth strokes to help this self leveling paint have a super smooth brush stroke free finish! No water needed. My dog, Schatzie wasn’t feeling well and was hiding under the end table. This table is painted with French Linen and then the accents painted over the French Linen with Steel Magnolias Moonshine Metallic paint in probably 3 coats. Sealed all with Gator Hide which was sprayed with a sprayer. Gator Hide is Dixie Belle’s best protection from water! I applied this with a high density foam roller, in 3 thin coats and allowed 2 hrs between coats. When I first rolled it on and looked at it, I thought I might have missed spots…I resisted the urge to touch those spots again until it was dry and then went over with another thin coat. So many times you can mess up a beautiful finish because you try to touch it up W instead of trusting that you covered it once….it was hot that day and GH dries pretty quick when applied thin. Tips on Tuesday: Sealers Often, I'm asked which DBP sealer is the strongest or which one to use. Aside from Gator Hide, Gloss is the toughest topcoat. All of the DBP Clear Coats are water resistant; only Gator Hide is water repellent. I use Satin Clear Coat the most as the eggshell finish is my favorite. I use Gator Hide on table tops and anything going outside. I always seal first with one coat of clear coat, let dry then apply Gator Hide. It provides a smoother surface upon which to apply the Gator Hide, which seems to help minimize skipping and streaking. I then apply two coats of Gator Hide waiting two hours in between coats. I also apply with a damp sponge or brush and never use an angle or natural bristle brush to apply clear coats. Hope this helps. My best tip for applying Gator Hide to large smooth areas without getting cloudy and staying smooth! Use a high density foam roller. Here is a short video with me using it on this small top. Second to spraying, this is my top way to apply! This end table has sat by my recliner and endured much, even my little dogs walking on it, hot coffee spills. Coffee warmer left on all day while I worked a 12 hour shift. It is coated in Gator Hide. Which I have also used on my kitchen cabinets to make them scrubbable! Cures in about a month. Coming up I will post a video showing my favorite way to apply Gator Hide, short of using my sprayer.
