How to write College Supplemental Essays: The secret sauce to a great supplemental essay is to know the school. Colleges care about yield, so we want to convince them that you will say yes if admitted. A generic supplemental essay will make the admissions officer suspect you either applied on a whim or weren’t interested enough in the school to bother getting to know it. Do you understand the school’s graduation requirements? Are all undergraduate applications in the same school, or do they have specialized schools (eg Business, Education, Engineering)? Have you spoken to any students about campus life? Before writing, we’ll work with you to gather answers to these questions and more. Avoiding platitudes like, “I just knew as soon as I stepped foot on campus” and “I always imagined myself attending Yale” and “Who wouldn’t want to go to Harvard?” we will get specific. Together, we’ll identify one or more majors and minors that track with your activities and classes. We will explicitly make the connection in the supplement between your interests and the school’s offerings. For example, we’ll look at the classes offered and find some that match your story, or we will identify a professor working on research that resonates with your interests. Remember you are not bound to this academic track in college, but presenting a plan is better than saying, “I have no idea.” Colleges also want to know how you will contribute to their campus, so we’ll look at the clubs and extracurriculars and explain your interest in them. “I came into the college process intimidated and without a plan. I came out of it confident and having gotten in to almost all of my top schools. Thanks Abigail!! I felt greatly supported throughout the process and felt that they tailored to my needs individually. Katryna was also very helpful in finding other schools that would be a good fit! If you have a student who is a current high school junior, sophomore or freshman, they would be well served to start a Google Doc right now with all of their activities on it. This document can be edited over time, but should include any and all activities they participate in, whether it’s work experience, sports, artistic or musical endeavors, volunteer commitments, awards won, etc. Every application they fill out will include these activities, and it’s much easier to accurately describe all that they have done if they start now than at the crunch of college application time! They will also need this for NHS applications, letters of recommendation and resumes. This is quite time-consuming, and it’s just so much better to start early! A great college essay has at least four characteristics. It is: Authentic. The whole point is to be yourself. Admissions officers want to know you and they can’t do that if you are using smoke and mirrors to tell them what you think they want to hear. This student didn’t have a flashy resume. Instead of trying to impress, she embraced her strengths and was admitted to a school with a 9% acceptance rate. Honest. Avoid cliché. It’s so tempting to rely on formulaic writing, and I (and I’m sure many admissions officers) am allergic to it. We work to find novel ways to introduce common/cliche points/notions. This student avoided tropes when telling the story of his recovery from anorexia. Humble. The tendency to brag is never a good idea. Sharing vulnerability – revealed through an unexpected or unique story or phrasing – is always powerful. Simple. Yup. Let’s focus on and explore one idea rather than trying to fit your biography, or worse, your entire resume, into the essay. This student identifies one of his character strengths, and keeps his essay focused on what it means to be bold. Many people want to apply to UCSB, and should if they have absolutely stellar qualifications. HOWEVER, 111K people applied to UCSB this year. Those are just not good odds!! 31K were admitted; their posted admit rate is 27.9%. I don’t love using admit rate because it implies that everyone who applies has a 27.9% chance of getting in. The truth is that these are only your odds (ish) if you are qualified. The middle 50% GPA at UCSB was 4.13 - 4.29. If you have less that this, it is extremely unlikely that you’ll be accepted. The bottom line is that you may be a very qualified candidate, but still you must cast a wide net of other schools to apply to that you’re in love with! For students in a hurry, the Activities section of the Common Application appears to be a fill-in-the-blank. However, rushing through it is not a good idea. The Activities section is the foundation upon which the entire application structure is built! It’s an essential and critical piece of the applicant’s holistic picture. There are only ten slots and 300 characters total to tell the admissions rep why each activity matters and how it furthers your story. It’s important to think about why an activity matters. Is it more important to share that you led the team in goals or that you started the Compliment Box on your soccer team to counteract the competitive vibe between players? The answer depends on you so we’ll decide that together! When a student has more than ten activities, we use the Additional Information section strategically to expand on their interests. College applications open August 1. For current high school Juniors, application deadlines are such that they will be submitting with the cumulative GPA that are earning right now. As we enter the last quarter of the school year, your juniors are probably looking towards AP tests, final exams, and summer! But before they embark on all of those, it’s important to give consideration to part of the college application that is too often overlooked: teacher letters of recommendation. These letters are critical to college admission offices that review applicants holistically because often the best way for colleges to know what a student will be like in their college classes is to hear from people who taught the student what they were like in high school classes! So before your students fast-forward to end-of-the-school-year festivities, consider these three tips to help them secure letters of recommendation that will help their applications stand out. #collegeapplications #classof2025 #highschooljunior #getintocollege #collegeadmissions #collegecounselor #GalinEd #GalinEducation

The best time to start is in June and July. The Common Application takes roughly 5-10 hours, though this estimate can vary widely. The initial interview is the most essential piece of the process, since that is how we get to know what makes the applicant special and unique. As we chat about extracurricular interests and activities, we start filling out the Activities/Honors/Additional Information sections. We also determine whether we can take advantage of the COVID question (this may be removed for the 2023 application season) and whether the student needs to fill out an additional question (for example if they had disciplinary action or switched schools). These take extra time, of course, but also provide an opportunity to tell the admissions officer more details. Students whose activities sections are full and complex require extra time and strategy. Please note: Not all schools take the Common Application but I’ve never met a student who didn’t use it at all. We know how to repurpose writings from the Common App for the Coalition App, UC system, or college specific applications like Georgetown, MIT, and Loyola. Register for a free consultation! “Success is a little about having a positive attitude and a lot about making a positive commitment to ‘find a way.’” This quote couldn’t be more true for high school students navigating the college admissions process. It can feel daunting, competitive, and overwhelming at times. But the key to standing out and getting into your dream school is all about your mindset and willingness to put in the work. Sure, having good grades and test scores is important. But colleges are looking for more than just numbers. They want to see students who are driven, resilient, and passionate about pursuing their goals - no matter the obstacles. It’s about finding creative ways to enhance your application, whether that’s pursuing unique extracurricular activities, taking on leadership roles, or crafting a standout admissions essay. If your student has been placed on a wait list(s) for a school(s) that they are dying to attend, they are probably feeling pretty unsettled right now. A wait list at any school is a gamble, a balancing act between taking an acceptance that has already been presented to them or holding out hope that they’ll eventually be accepted. Decision Day is May 1. They could hear from the wait list schools prior to that, or they could linger on a wait list for several weeks. It’s certainly possible that they are on a wait list for a school(s) that they will not get in. It’s a hard position to be in; the decision between getting excited about schools that accepted you and holding out hope for a “better” option. There is something to be said for buying the sweatshirt, looking up housing, beginning a search for a roommate…really getting excited about your future school. I would encourage anyone to think that way about the schools to which they have been accepted! If they wait a long time on a wait list, it can kind of feel like everyone around them is making definitive plans for next year and they’re not. Again, a tough position to be in. If you have received a merit scholarship at any school and would like to try to negotiate for more money, you can contact your local/state admission counselor. If you have received offers from other schools, you should be prepared to submit them. It’s worth a try!
