The first miller of the "new mill" on Glen Avon was William Prisk James who was the miller from 1859 to 1866 and must have been involved in the building and installation of the current mill. It is said that 125 mills were operating in the Eastern Cape in 1873. These old-style mills of rotating mill stones became obsolete with the advent of roller mills. A small belt-driven roller mill was installed to increase capacity. I spent a couple of days at @glenavonfarm outside Somerset East recently and noticed that it's that time of the year when the Golden Orb Spiders start to make their appearance. These large spiders are well known in South Africa for their magnificent golden webs. The webs are huge, often spanning a large area between bushes and are so strong that they are known to trap small birds. Most orb-web spiders appear in the spring but are not noticed until summer to autumn when they are big enough to spin their webs. The female spiders are large with the males being much smaller, and the web often contains multiple spiders. They usually have black legs and a yellow-to-white abdomen. Toward the end of autumn, the females will lay their last clutch of eggs and then die when the cold of winter sets in. Especially with the first frost. The eggs can survive the winter (even withstanding freezing) due to their simplistic nature. The warmth of the spring will cause the eggs to mature, releasing a new generation of orb-web spiders. The Walter Battiss Art Museum is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Somerset East. The building was built in 1818 in the early days of Somerset Farm and was used as the English Officer’s Mess. The two-storied house with its long shaded verandah was hired by the Battiss family, who ran it as the Battiss Private Hotel between 1914 and 1917, when the recession which followed the First World War forced them to close, and move to Koffiefontein. Today it functions as an art museum housing the large collection of Battiss’ work, as well as family items, books, letters, and some of Professor Battiss’ clothing and personal items. Did you know that the first Angora goats arrived in South Africa in 1838? At the time Turkey was very protective of their own country’s mohair industry. The Sultan of Turkey, Mahmud II, sent an ewe and 12 infertile rams to South Africa as a gift. What the sultan fortunately didn’t know was that the ewe was pregnant. She bore a ram, and this ewe and her lamb formed the genesis of Angora farming in South Africa. In 1856 a further consignment of pure-bred angoras was imported and all this was the start of the industry that today produces the biggest volume of the highest quality mohair in the world. Somerset East is rich in history and the history of Glen Avon Farm is very closely linked with that of the town. Shortly after the establishment of the town of Somerset in 1825, land on the slopes of the Boschberg Mountain was given to the Wesleyan missionaries for a chapel and graveyard. The chapel was completed and consecrated in 1828, but a few years later the building and surrounding land were transferred to the Dutch Reformed Church and in 1835 the chapel was converted into a parsonage. In 1971, the building, an exquisite example of a Georgian manor house, was made available as a museum which was inaugurated during the celebration of the town's 150th anniversary in 1975. Today the building is the Somerset East (Old Parsonage) Museum showing life in the Victorian era, the history of Slagtersnek as well as various other displays. The first mill on Glen Avon was built by Robert Hart Snr in 1823. It was built into the hill between The Gulley and the dairy, behind Hart Cottage. This mill would have had a wooden wheel and all that remains of it is the grindstone, which is paved into the entrance of the current mill. The mill in its present situation was built in 1862, evidenced by the wheel being dated 1861. This mill would have been built by Robert Hart Jnr since his father would have been in his early 80’s by this time. There is speculation that this is the third mill and that a second, smaller mill stood here before. There is no proof but for word of mouth and the change in the structure from stone to brick higher up. Glen Avon Waterfall is said to be one of the highest drops of water on private land in South Africa. Getting to the waterfall is at least a 10 km hike that takes you through indigenous forest into a riverine-forested valley where sneezewood and cabbage trees grow. The waterfall and the kloof have been declared the Glen Avon Falls Natural Heritage Site (No 71). Bird watchers could identify 235 species of birds, ranging from small sunbirds to birds of prey and an occasional sighting of the rare Cape Vulture. Large game includes kudu, bushbuck, duiker and mountain reedbuck. A refreshing dip in the pool below the falls awaits you at your destination. The family graveyard down the road from the Retreat farmhouse has a very interesting and unique feature. In the back corner is the Hart Vault where Robert Hart Snr and a few of his immediate family members are buried. If you follow the little path it will take you to the front of the vault where you'll find inscriptions clearly indicating which members of the Hart family are buried inside. A combination of an old era now driven by a modern age. Back in the days, water flowed from the Mill Dam over the mill wheel and down to the Diptank Dam from where the water was used for flood irrigation. Since Greg took over farming on Glen Avon all flood-irrigated land was changed to permaset sprinkler irrigation. This meant that there was no use for the water in Diptank Dam since it was too low to gravity-feed the irrigation system. That also meant that any water used to run the mill would essentially go to waste. The solution, in order to benefit from the water in Diptank Dam, was to put up a solar pumping system. Towards the end of 2018 such a system was installed which meant the water in Diptank Dam could now be used once pumped up to Mill Dam. This also meant that water used to run the mill would not be going to “waste”. The inside of the Glen Avon Mill has become a virtual museum of old mill and farming equipment. The mill wasn't just restored to working condition again but the inside has been cleaned up, years of dust and bat guano removed, wood polished and all the historic items put on display.
