Service should feel like MAGIC! But it's not. Ask anyone who has worked in a service industry and they'll tell you the crazy amount of work it takes to make sure guests/clients are happy! My belief is simple. Service should not be limited to clients/guests! In fact, SERVICE to the team and to the organization should be the first and last thing leaders think about, write about, and give each day! "Organizational Service" should become just as popular of a term as "Client Service". When I was in college my dad got me a little stone that had the following Patton quote etched into it, "Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory." Running a small business is a lesson in learning to accept the challenges with humility and perseverance. I've found the best way to move forward in a positive light it to VISION where you want it to go. Every year, I've spent time defining what I want the next year to look like and I've documented it for the team and myself. COVID caused us to REDEFINE 2020 so we did - but we kept moving into the path that was right for us. I revisit this a few times every year to remind myself of how the business has developed and start to chart the vision for the next year. I am exceptionally proud of this organizational development history of BMT. It speaks to how we grew, how we adjusted, and how we both talked the talk and walked the walk. And in 2024 that walk takes all of us on our roads to happy! In 2013 we were headed down a path where 3 teammates with bad culture were trying to contaminate the rest of our team. We had a lot of work to do if we wanted to correct this and do so in a positive way. We learned a lot of important lessons in the 3 months we dedicated to figuring out a way to lead in a positive manner and set healthy and positive boundaries about what it meant to be a part of our team. We created what we called the "Road To Happy". We wanted to find a way to have a difficult conversation with teammates we knew weren't a good match for our business. We felt it was important to acknowledge to the teammates that their actions and energy let us know they weren't happy being a part of our team. We thought by acknowledging it - this gave us the best chance to try to fix it. We talked about how we wanted them to be happy. If their goals aligned with ours we could work together, however, if they had mentally moved on or wanted something else, then we could help them achieve that. We stressed that our goal was for them to be happy and healthy as a human. If that meant not being a part of or team any longer, that was ok. We would support them as they continued down their road to happy! This proved to be one of the most pivotal time in our business. We found a way to live in our values and make some changes that sent us on the path of a culture of kindness and caring that is felt in everything we do. Since then, The Road To Happy, has changed how we view it and how we use it. Instead of a tool used for correction it is a tool we have to help inspire, encourage, and cheer on our team to continue to do the things that bring them joy and make them happy! Leveraging Tech to Hold Boundaries is a new favorite topic of mine. I talk to you all a lot, legit muchisimo, about using tech to expand, absorb, to organize your work/thoughts/appointments. Then I started thinking about how I was doing absolutely the most. I had my tech on full Buzz Lightyear Mode, to infinity and beyond, so I kept agreeing to everything. And then what happened - I started to feel that nasty feeling of potential burnout. IMMEDIATE RED FLAG MI GENTE. I took a full step back. I started to realize that if I can use my tech to stabilize my business and participate in so many different projects why couldn't I also leverage it to hold my boundaries. I.e.
