Despite the name, Hydra is not a well hydrated island. We are graced with months of colorful blossoms and green growth during the rainier season, however most visitors only see the dry days with few flowers (bougainvillea is the magical survivor of the harsh summer heat) yet plenty of beautiful cacti and succulents which grow easily in the strong sun and root happily in the dense clay soil. With a busy season ahead and no time to patiently collect bougainvillea on a daily basis, we've made a logical decision to use the hardy cacti instead. Putting our discarded candle holders to good use, we've spray painted them before sticking the cacti pups/offsets into the mixture of used espresso ground, compost, and red rocky Hydra soil for a beautiful and practical composition of reused and recycled table decor to adorn our café tables alongside our freshly printed day drinks menu. If anyone knows the name of this lithops please let me know! I impulsively bought a little pot with a variety of lithops in it, without thinking too much of it.
