During the week, our 1st XI Footballers represented the College in a preseason tournament at TSS. This carnival attracted schools from all over the country and as far away as Perth and Melbourne. During the week our First XI Football team spent the afternoon at Sporting Wheelies, Milton. This was a fabulous opportunity for our boys to gain first hand insight into resilience and gratitude. The boys demonstrated a real appreciation for their livelihoods. The boys took part in a game of wheelchair basketball, goal ball, and heard background stories of some of the staff. The session will no doubt be helpful for any adversity they may face during the season and throughout their daily lives. The College is thrilled to announce the First XV coaching staff for the upcoming 2024 season. This group of coaches brings a wealth of experience and expertise, and we are excited about the positive impact they will have on rugby at BBC. Head Coach – Mr Daniel Leo Dan brings a wealth of rugby knowledge from his playing days with some of Europe’s biggest clubs to his international experience with his beloved Manu Samoa. BBC Rugby is extremely fortunate to have Dan at the helm in 2024. In 2023, Dan demonstrated the style of rugby that you can expect to see via the all-conquering undefeated Second XV team. His passion for the game and commitment to player development make him the ideal leader for our program. Assistant Coach – Mr Brad Thorn A man who needs no introduction to the rugby community, Brad Thorn will join Dan on the coaching staff as Assistant Coach. Brad is arguably the most decorated dual international in history, with two Rugby World Cup titles to his name, an NRL Premiership title, and a State of Origin Series winner. Brad will play a key role in supporting Dan with player development, focusing on implementing defence and tackle contest strategies. Assistant Coach – Mr Ben Meehan Ben Meehan will serve as the other Assistant Coach for the First XV. Ben recently retired from professional rugby, having played Super Rugby for the Melbourne Rebels, followed by an eight-season stint in the English Premiership with London Irish and Gloucester. Ben’s focus lies in running the First XV attack system and backs division. Support Staff The support team are integral to the smooth operation of the rugby program at BBC. What an incredible display of spirit, grit, brotherhood, community, and aspiration at the @gpsqld Swimming Championships on Friday by our boys. In the Senior Championships BBC achieved fourth, our best performance in almost a decade, while in the Junior Championships we were proud to place sixth. Special mention has to go to the following boys who really lived this year’s motto of #aspire. -- Jack McMahon (Year 10) flew off the blocks in the 50m butterfly to not only become GPS Champion but also break the College record. -- Andre Venter (Year 9) powered home in the 50m breaststroke to become GPS champion. -- Charlie Russell (Year 12) achieved a College record in the 100m freestyle, and placed second in both the 50m and 100m freestyle. Thursday the 16th November saw the youngest boys in the college battle it out at the BBC Pool, for the all prestigious Junior School Swimming Championships A particularly hot day it turned out to be, the boys cheering on there team mates from each of there houses and racing there hearts out. Term 4 has signaled a return to Rowing at BBC with pre-season events, camp and training now in full swing. Congratulations to 2024 Captain of Boats, Conrad Scott, who has been rewarded for the dedication and experience he brings to the Rowing Program. Likewise, Vice Captains Jonathan O’Rorke and Ari Bottomer bring passion and a willingness to strive for excellence in rounding out the 2024 Rowing Leadership Team. A well-attended and spirited Boat Naming Ceremony was held Saturday 14 October, where six new boats were introduced to the BBC fleet. The boats have been named after coaches, coordinators, 2023 Captain of Boats, Mitch Owen (Year 12), and esteemed old boys. With such a rich history of rowing success at BBC, those honoured with naming rights are to be rightfully celebrated. We wish all students in the Rowing Program all the very best for a magnificent 2024 Season. Go College. PRE SEASONNNN!! The 2024 GPS swimming pre season has started with a bang ❗️ Pre Season has kicked off with a few boys competing in the local St Peter’s Long Course qualifying carnival last Saturday, Battling it out to gain those all crucial qualifying times to enter for states and nationals in the next coming months. Poolside with Coaches Sean, Lachie and Dave’s advice the crew managed to bring home a truckload of medals and some awesome times… Well done lads Staying in the pool, the boys have been hard at it, With now 6 pool sessions in the program, the boys have been training hard eager to triumph not just there own GPS goals, but the team GPS goals aswell as we all work towards that end goal. GPS Alongside the swimming aspect, The BBC swimming program has been working with Jason (A BBC personal trainer) to improve the boys strength and flexibility + mobility in areas the boys, didn’t even that know they even had. Jonathan also accompanied the 2023 First VIII on the Henley Royal Regatta tour. Alongside these two boys this year the program will introduce a 2nd Vice Captain, Ari Bottomer will be taking on this role. Ari carries 5 years of rowing experience behind him. The familiar strains of the bag pipes rang out, piping in the Year 12 cohort one last time, while 2023 College Captain, James Alexander proudly reflected that his heart will always be #GreenWhiteBlack, before handing over to his successor - 2024 College Captain Shravanth Pradeep Reddy. A stirring performance of Coldplay’s ’Yellow’ by Year 12 students, Payton Willcocks and Teddy Magdics was well received before 9 students, who started at BBC in Prep, were recognised for their tenure. Pre-season has kicked off! Starting with a select few of our boys who conquered the Rum City's waters from the 16th - 18th of September at the 2023 QLD Schools' Championship Regatta, hosted in Bundaberg. The boys represented the College proudly bringing home a🥈, in the Open CB4x (Opens Schoolboys Coxed four). The boys learned valuable lessons that will come in handy throughout the upcoming 2024 season. Pre-season camp then kicked off on Monday the 25th of September for years 8-12. The primary goal being to get the boys comfortable in the boat again. Furthermore, coaching those who are new to the program, this goal was certainly was achieved with all boys participating in sculling, crew, ergo and recovery sessions. Boys in year 11 and 12 also spent 2 days out at Wyaralong Dam getting comfortable with the 2km course where they will race during the season. BBC Rowing is certainly looking strong for the upcoming 2024 season. Thank you to all those involved in organizing the Schools Championship Regatta and camp. This event is even bigger than GPS with 80 boys’ teams in the competition. Our First V boys competed in Division 1 (top division) and placed 4th in the state. Heading into the semi-finals, our team had won 5 games from 5 games and were ranking equal first. Rohan Hazratwala (Year 10) secured his maiden International Tennis Federation title at the Adelaide Junior International yesterday. A fantastic achievement and a reward for all his hard work in 2023. Later that same day, Rohan made it a double, taking out the doubles title with his partner Oliver King. Rohan becomes the first BBC player since Dane Sweeny in 2017 (currently world #258) to win an ITF tournament. We are pleased to announce that the BBC Junior Tennis Teams recently achieved outstanding results at the Tennis Queensland Primary Schools Cup. All teams performed with distinction, and both Year 5A and Year 6A teams won their Regional Final and will now progress to the State Finals in January 2024. Year 6B was also successful, winning the Participation Final, while Year 5B finished fifth in their category. To cap off representing BBC with such accomplishment, our tennis players had the opportunity to watch Australian Tennis Players John Millman, James Duckworth, and Priscilla Hon on the practice courts and even take a few photos with the stars. The final home game of the season is this Saturday, so our Basketball players would love your support and hope to see everyone drop by the Sports Complex from 12.15pm. Last weekend was the annual BBC Cultural Round, where the community recognised and commemorated First Nations students past, present, and emerging. Thank you to the First Nations students who led the First V Team out of the tunnel, and to Walter Bathern for presenting the Welcome to Country. This ceremony was a wonderful opportunity to inform our school community on First Nations culture and highlight the thought and detail that went into the design of the Cultural Round uniforms that your BBC basketball teams proudly wore for the day. Not to be disheartened by previous losses and several injuries, the First V came out firing against Ipswich Grammar. The boys held a steady lead throughout the game and secured a well-deserved and passionate win. Round 3 was our first home game and also Old Boys' Day. It was incredible to have a huge crowd, filled with current BBC boys, Old Boys, and many past Captains of Basketball, cheering the students on!
