P2 finish. Close, but no champagne. Still an awesome race and great result. . I went into this round knowing I had great pace. In my first race that was confirmed, qualifying P2, taking the lead cleanly on the first corner but then being punted off a lap later to end up finishing 17th. After that I was close to vowing never to race GT Sport again. The PC for ACC will be arriving soon... . But I wasn't going to leave it there. I brushed myself off and hopped into the next slot. For most of the quali session I was sitting in an uncomfortable P3, with P4 only 1/10th back. With session ticking by it was time to focus. Head down, 4 tenths shaved, Pole by 0.007s. . Into the race P2 was quick and all over my bumper. The FWD cars were quick in the first phase of the race with the McLaren coming good as the race wore on. We had a small gap to the chasers, so I opted to let him by to use his pace and slipstream to pull a gap and secure the podium. . And it almost worked for the win, he pulled about 3-4s at one point. By the finish I'd pulled it back to 0.8s. I'd made a few errors, and one particularly messy curb jump was worth at least half a second of that. . But nevermind, P2 was a great finish and a good points haul. I'll take it. Strengths and weaknesses. . A different sort of post this week. . Without a target race this week, I thought I'd try a few laps of the Daily Race B quali time trial - to keep myself sharp and for sanity. . I've grown to really enjoy the 650S since I decided to race McLaren this season. It is nimble and hugely effective, if occasionally a bit lively and recalcitrant, the latter due to the slightly laggy nature of its engine. But I struggled to get any pace out of it at Mount Panorama, it was just a messy handful. . I wondered if it was just me, perhaps my sensitivity had diminished having spent too much time with the comparatively benign GT4 car. So I swapped to one of my other favourites, the GT3 F-Type. . I was immediately on the pace, the car felt great. So I switched back to the 650S, the best I could manage was a second off the Jag. . I was curious where the difference was, so I chased my F-Type ghost with the McLaren. Initially the mid engined 650S pulled a gap on the Jag, but then the tables turn. Massively. . The Esses, the tricky downhill rollercoaster completely upsets the hyperactive, tail happy McLaren - meaning I had to very gently ease it through each direction change. By contrast, the super stable F-Type could just be flicked through with ease - giving a huge advantage in lap time. . Not great, not bad. . Last night I'd decided that I wasn't going to race this one, but I had a change of heart when it dawned on me that my terrible pace in the second half of the practice race was because I was on the wrong tyre. . Nevermind, I look my still less than scintillating pace into today's race at the fictional Alsace circuit. . I qualified 9th which wasn't bad considering how little I'd prepared, and it being a stacked group - I was wearing number 15. Into the race I immediately had good pace and probably pushed a little too hard as the tyres went off quicker than I'd hoped they would. . The race would have two pitstops for tyres and fuel, so there was some element of having to play the long game, but in the end it was a fairly one dimensional flat out bunfight. . The circuit really suited the front drive "TCR" style machines, so they were the race, with the GT4 class cars that form the bulk of Gr4 feeling like being in a second race behind the main event. . Nevertheless I kept focussed (mostly) and brought home 8th. Podium! . This was a difficult race. I had good pace, and I love Spa, so I really wanted a good result. . In the first race slot of the day I put in a P3 quali, but the race went south on the first lap in what was, from my perspective, a 50:50 incident, the guy ahead getting a tank slapper and me being in the way. . Never mind, second time slot. . Crappy quali so I started P6. Not great. I had a bad start that put me out of the slip ahead and in the clutches on the driver behind. . I kept my head, fended off a stupid dive from ridiculously far behind (which incidentally gave me the breathing room) and then chased back up to the group ahead. . They were in full battle mode, I decided it would be wiser to just let them beat each other up rather than get involved, so I just followed. The inevitable happened and soon one of them was backwards in the middle of the track. I was hit off in the process but luckily managed to get back on quickly so only lost about 3-4s. . I chased hard and kept my laps tidy. I caught P3 ahead fairly quickly, and passed easily as he'd got a penalty for hitting the other guy off. From there I just chased hard, trying to get in touch with P2. . I didn't quite manage it, I'd got it down to about 2s but a few errors saw me loose the gains and that was that. A comfortable podium and fastest lap as a bonus. They didn't see me again. . A quick recap. I drove like a tosser in the first race and turned my P3 quali into a 5th. I went again, but having tanked my SR (Sportsmanship Rating) in the first race, I found myself in what felt like a punishment race - a poor quality, rough field. . Fortunately the second race rehabilitated my SR so I was back with "my people" for the third race. And a strong field too. Despite having more or less equalled my best ever driver rating, I found myself no. 17. . Quali started badly, with my first lap baulked, but I managed to squeeze in a flyer that secured P2. The race started well, we all slotted into position without any of the needless barging of race 2. Then the leader made a huge mistake, making intimate contact with the Armco. The incident got me off line and I picked up a track limits penalty, so despite being in P1, I was very much on the back foot. Luckily P2 also picked up a penalty so I emerged from lap 1 in the lead. And that was it. They squabbled, I charged. I opened a gap which eventually grew to 5.6s by the finish. A wonderfully uneventful race, but a hard won win. . Truth be told, I was on edge all day because I knew I could win this one, so nothing but a win would do. Not bad, not great. . More frustrations again tonight. . First race I was blocked in quali so ended up with a decidedly average P7. The race was a very tough affair and I found myself bundled back to 12th. I'd recovered to 5th on the last lap only to be punted off and finishing 13th. But my pace was ok, and my improving tyre management meant I was very quick towards the end of the race distance. . I had to go again. I had a better quali, the errors being my own, but found myself down in 8th in a very competitive lobby. Into the race I had a messy first lap and lost a good few places. But I stayed focused and did my best to stay out of trouble. It paid off and I pulled myself back into contention. . During the last few laps I broke clear of the group I was in started chasing down the P4/5/6 group ahead. On the final lap I caught them and it all kicked off on the final corners. I managed an opportunist move to get myself into 4th only to be barged by P6 in the final turn to finish P5. . So not a bad result, and being honest 4th was my potential for this one. I also enjoyed a lot of the racing when it was good, but there are currently so many bad apples on GT Sport (since lockdown), and let's not mention the penalty system, that it really takes the shine off the experience. Sometimes you just need to be patient. . First race I qualified 7th, not terrible but not great. Then the start glitch. All the cars ground to a halt on the rolling start. When we eventually got going but turbo lag had us down to maybe P16 out of T1. The race just went downhill. I pulled my way back only to be hit off a couple of times along the way, ending up second last. . To be honest I was exceptionally annoyed, on the verge of vowing never to race in GT Sport again for the utterly terrible standard of driving. But then I thought I owed myself another go. . Second race quali was very bad, I was hit off (seriously!?) but managed to sneak in a P6. Into the race I picked up a 1s penalty for some innocent T2 first lap door rubbing (seriously!?) and started to question my decision to race again. Nevermind, I decided to just stay positive and be patient. Let the race come to me. The penalty put me in 9th but I just kept my head, raced smart and picked off my opponents one by one. I ran long on the softs, taking care of them, and that gained me a few places. . Into the last lap I was in P4, and had P3 lined up. I made my move on the second last corner but it was messy so I slowed to give the place back. Watching the replay after I was perhaps a little too generous, but better a clear conscience than a tainted podium. P4 was a great result, but again frustrating to know it was an easy P2 or 3 if not for the idiotic penalty. . @thegranturismo really need to sort the penalty system out. At the moment it rewards idiots but randomly punishes clean racers. Much better. . Crappy quali. My quali lap from the first race would have had me on pole by a big margin. Instead I started P8. . A canny tyre strategy saw me make the most of others slipstream while on the slower mediums. From then on, being out of sync with most of the field had me in clear air for much of the race. . When it all shook out, 2nd and 3rd emerged from their final stops a couple of seconds ahead on the final lap. The strategy paid off, but it was frustrating because a huge moment and grass excursion, entirely my own fault, cost me around 5-7s and therefore 2nd place. . But it doesn't matter. P8 > P4 will do for me. Lucky 13. . For round 3 of this first stage of the actual FIA Manufacturers championship I had once again done very little prep. Enough to know I had good pace but no clue of the strategy. So my plan was to do two races today, the first to work out the strategy, the second one would count. . The first race went predictability badly. My quali was a little compromised, so started in 12th finished 16th, awful by my recent standards. I got the tyre strategy all wrong, overdriving and killing the mediums and then having to run two stints on softs. But it did seem a good idea to run the inverted strategy, starting on hards. . For the second race, starting door number 13, I had a terrible quali (P16) being baulked badly by an idiot who would come to feature again in the race. It cost me around half a second, but with the ultra competitive lobbies that was the difference between P6 and P16. . Starting near the back again I ran a strategy with two laps on hards, then switched to a shorter stint on mediums followed by the softs (all compounds being mandatory). It was all going to plan until the final chase on softs. I was unlucky to pick up a stupid penalty while being rough passed, which meant I ended up tangling twice with The Idiot, and losing a lot of time in the process. This meant I was passed by another faster chaser and missed out on getting stuck into the battle for 6th. . But nevermind, eventually finishing 9th in a very competitive field was a pretty good result. For sure I had the pace for 5th, but cest la vie, it was a heap of fun.
