States #20 and 21 - Pennsylvania and New York. I think I have been subconsciously avoiding the northeastern states. When I think about most of the Northeast, I picture crowded cities, congested streets, and limited amounts of ground to work with. Add to that some quirky game laws, and I just haven't been in a hurry to travel in that direction. How wrong I was! Rural Pennsylvania and upstate New York are absolutely beautiful and so much like home in Tennessee. Most importantly, turkeys act like turkeys no matter where you find them. I am blessed to have made some new friends and had the opportunity to explore some new places that turkeys call home. As I continue this quest, it becomes clearer and clearer that the true reward is the people that you meet along the way. I continue to be humbled by the kindness and generosity of others. People who would have forever been strangers if not for our shared love of the wild turkey. I am also reminded time and time again of the love and support that my beautiful wife has for me and my (nearly) unhealthy obsession for hunting turkeys in new places. It is not easy being the one who keeps things running perfectly at home while the other plays. I am aware and forever grateful. Peace out 2024 turkey season - I am done. April 14, 2024 Summary: I had put this bird (yellow) to bed Saturday night. I saw him walk through the gap and head to the hill side. He had been in the same place the previous two days, so chances were he'd do it again. I just hoped he'd fly down and walk through the gap I set up in (orange). When he started gobbling that morning, I knew I had a good chance. When the hens (red) behind me, started yelping at him, I knew it would be quick. He'd either come to me and wait, or if they flew down before him, he could skirt me on his way. Thankfully he flew down and walked the yellow line to the end of my barrel. Analysis: You have to get where they want to be when they're henned up. Side note: The blue tom gobbled a lot after my gunshot. He must have been the sub bird. State #19 Iowa was a treat. I had heard good things about the turkey hunting in Iowa and it was every bit as good as advertised. To go somewhere where turkeys act like turkeys are supposed to is just special - especially when you are used to hunting hardheaded gobblers in the Southeast. And to share it with good friends is the absolute best. The worst thing about trying to knock off new states every year is not having time to go back to the spots you find that you really like. State #18 Mississippi. During this journey, I've found there are some states that you look forward to hunting and some states you just look forward to being done with.
