#workinprogress of my illustration for the @riso_pop Open Call. There's going to be an open studio this weekend and the entries for the "a window into spring" call for submissions will be exhibited and some also up for sale! 🤩 If you're in or close to Amstedam, stop by for some riso fun and or drinks! Very curious how this one will turn out.... It will be a 4 colour print, which is way more than what I usually work with 🤣 . . .

Here's Baba Yaga's House, printed at last month's Risoclub meeting at @riso_pop We are working with grey (recycled) testpaper now, and it's always really interesting to see how the same print turns out on different types of paper! (even if it has the same color) I prefer the off-white paper, but there were other people at the print session that preferred the grey 🤔 . . .

Here's a quick mockup I made for my long running and neverending side project of creating a collection of my favourite fairytales with matching illustrations. I need to start thinking about possible layouts in addition to the illustrations, and that sort of stuff is not my strength 🤣 But I love doing research at the library and trying to collect ideas and references of beautifully illustrated / layouted books. Hopefully I'll manage something nice in the end! . . . #bookillustration #bookoffairytales #fairytalebook #booklayout #fairytaleart #instainktober #sketch #turtle #monkey #crosshatching #fairytale #japanese #folktale #inktoberart #inktoberday2 #digitalartwork #digitalinking #inkingart #procreateart #zeichnungen #artgra #illustrationart #illustratenow #drawingpractice #instaartistic #visiblewomen #dailysketching #sketch_dailydose

Still reworking some old illustrations from the fairytale inktober batch. I've been looking at some if the fairytale sketches I made during Inktober 2022. I'm trying to rework some of the artworks where I liked the concept but wasn't really happy with the final execution. This one lacked a lot of detail in my opinion, so I'm trying to find a way to add more texture in the lines without distracting from the subjects... Still not sure how to finish, but I like where it's at so far! This is based on a Norwegian fairytale collected by Asbjornsen and Moe. It is of ATU classification 302 and has many different versions varying per country. . . . #inktober2022 #instainktober #sketch #crosshatching #folktale #norwegian #giant #brothers #inktoberart #inktoberday22 #digitalartwork #digitalinking #inkingart #procreateart #zeichnungen #artgram #illustrationart #illustratenow #drawingpractice #instaartistic #visiblewomen #dailysketching #sketch_dailydose

My Inktober journey 2022-2023 🖤 Since I only created 3 artworks for 2022 and they appeared to be in the same sketchbook, I added them to this years collection. Looking back they’re all together not many, but I’m still proud and happy with them. After several long breaks, it really was an achievement for me ☺️ *** _ _ #inktober2023, #inktoberchallenge2023, #inktoberartist, #inktoberdrawings, #penartistofinstagram, #inksketchbook, #penandpaperart, #inkartdrawing, #drawingwithink, #lineartworks, #darkarts, #inkwithme, #instainktober, #instaink, #inkdrawingseries, #darksurealism, #beautifulbizzarre, #traditionaldrawingstyle, #mangaillustration, #mangaartistofinstagram, #blacknwhiteillustration, #bnwartwork, #inktoberfinished, #inktoberdump, #schwarzweisszeichnung, #tintenzeichnung, #riyaueng

Day 31: Vor From https://berloga-workshop.com/blog/99-vor.html In Norse mythology, Vör (Old Norse, possibly "the careful one," or "aware, careful") is a goddess associated with wisdom. Vör is attested in the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson; and twice in kennings employed in skaldic poetry. Scholars have proposed theories about the implications of the goddess. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 30: Valkyries From norse-mythology.org: A valkyrie (pronounced “VAL-ker-ee”; Old Norse valkyrja, plural valkyrjur, “choosers of the fallen”) is a female helping spirit of the god Odin. The modern image of the valkyries as elegant, noble maidens bearing dead heroes to Valhalla is largely accurate for what it is, but a highly selective portrayal that exaggerates their pleasant qualities. To some extent, this tendency toward sanitization is present even in the later Old Norse sources, which focus on their love affairs with human men and their assisting Odin in transporting his favorites among those slain in battle to Valhalla, where they will fight by his side during Ragnarok. As far as we today can tell, the valkyries have always had such characteristics, but in heathen times they were far more sinister. The meaning of their name, “choosers of the slain,” refers not only to their choosing who gains admittance to Valhalla, but also to their choosing who dies in battle and using malicious magic to ensure that their preferences in this regard are brought to fruition. Examples of valkyries deciding who lives and who dies abound in the Eddas and sagas. The valkyries’ gruesome side is illustrated most vividly in the Darraðarljóð, a poem contained within Njal’s Saga. Here, twelve valkyries are seen prior to the Battle of Clontarf, sitting at a loom and weaving the tragic fate of the warriors (an activity highly reminiscent of the Norns). They use intestines for their thread, severed heads for weights, and swords and arrows for beaters, all the while chanting their intentions with ominous delight. The Saga of the Volsungs compares beholding a valkyrie to “staring into a flame.” #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 29: Tyr From norse-mythology.org: Tyr (pronounced like the English word “tier”; Old Norse Týr, Old English Tiw, Old High German *Ziu, Gothic Tyz, Proto-Germanic *Tiwaz, “god”) is a Norse war god, but also the god who, more than any other, presides over matters of law and justice. His role in the surviving Viking Age myths is relatively slight, and his status in the later part of the Viking Age may have been correspondingly minor. But this wasn’t always the case. Other kinds of evidence show us that Tyr was once one of the most important gods to the Norse and other Germanic peoples. Tyr’s role as one of the principal war gods of the Norse, along with Odin and Thor, is well-attested in sources from the Viking Age and earlier. For example, in the Sigrdrífumál, one of the poems in the Poetic Edda, the valkyrie Sigrdrifa instructs the human hero Sigurd to invoke Tyr for victory in battle. Another Eddic poem, the Lokasenna, corroborates this picture by having Loki insult Tyr by saying that he could only stir people to strife, and could never reconcile them. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 28: Thrud From https://vikingr.org/norse-gods-goddesses/thrud: Thrud is the goddess of battle, or possibly a Valkyrie and thus naturally associated with battle. She is the daughter of Thor and Sif. However, Thrud is a little mysterious as not that much is known about her today. Still, there are several indications that she was well-known in the Viking Age.  The name Thrud, in Old Norse as “Þrúðr”, translates to “strength” or “power.” Given her lineage as the daughter of Thor, the god of thunder, this meaning is fitting. Throughout Norse poetic traditions, the use of kennings—metaphorical phrases—was prevalent, and Thrud’s identity shines through in several of these kennings. In the Prose Edda’s Skáldskaparmál, Thor is referred to by the kenning “father of Þrúðr” (faðir Þrúðar). Eysteinn Valdason further echoes this kenning in his poem about Thor, emphasizing the bond and shared identity between father and daughter. This kinship connection showcases Thrud’s importance and her standing in Norse mythology. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 27: Thor From norse-mythology.org: Thor (Old Norse Þórr, Old English Đunor, Old High German Donar, Proto-Germanic *Þunraz, “Thunder”) is one of the most prominent figures in Norse mythology. He was a major god of all branches of the Germanic peoples before their conversion to Christianity, although he reached the height of his popularity among the Scandinavians of the late Viking Age. Thor, the brawny thunder god, is the archetype of a loyal and honorable warrior, the ideal toward which the average human warrior aspired. He’s the indefatigable defender of the Aesir gods and their fortress, Asgard, from the encroachments of the giants, who are usually (although far from invariably) the enemies of the gods. No one is better suited for this task than Thor. His courage and sense of duty are unshakeable, and his physical strength is virtually unmatched. He even owns an unnamed belt of strength (Old Norse megingjarðar) that makes his power doubly formidable when he wears the belt. His most famous possession, however, is his hammer, Mjöllnir (“Lightning”). Only rarely does he go anywhere without it. For the heathen Scandinavians, just as thunder was the embodiment of Thor, lightning was the embodiment of his hammer slaying giants as he rode across the sky in his goat-drawn chariot. (Of course, they didn’t believe he physically rode in a chariot drawn by goats – like everything else in Germanic mythology, this is a symbol used to express an invisible reality upon which the material world is perceived to be patterned.) Thor’s particular enemy is Jormungand, the enormous sea serpent who encircles Midgard, the world of human civilization. In one myth, he tries to pull Jormungand out of the ocean while on a fishing trip, and is stopped only when his giant companion cuts the fishing line out of fear. Thor and Jormungand finally face each other during Ragnarok, however, when the two put an end to each other. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 26: Syn From oldworldgods.com: Norse Goddess Syn is a prominent figure in Norse mythology. As the guardian of Frigg‘s Hall, she keeps unwanted visitors at bay. Syn also plays a crucial role in guiding and protecting the accused in trials, highlighting her association with justice. Her significance is found in both poetic and prose Eddas, showcasing her mythology’s rich depth. With symbolic representations and her role in Icelandic culture, Syn holds a unique place in Norse cosmology. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 25: Sol From norse-mythology.org: Sol (pronounced like the English word “soul”; Old Norse Sól, “Sun”) is, as the name suggests, the divinity of the sun. Sol is female. Sol, along with her brother, Máni, ride through the sky on horse-drawn chariots. The horses who pull Mani’s chariot are never named, but Sol’s horses are apparently named Árvakr ("Early Riser”) and Alsviðr (“Swift”). They ride “swiftly” because they’re pursued through the sky by the wolves Skoll (“Mockery”) and Hati (“Hate”), who will overtake them when the cosmos descends back into chaos during Ragnarok. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 24: The Norns From norse-mythology.org: In Norse mythology, the Norns (pronounced like “norms” with an “n” instead of the “m”; Old Norse Nornir) are female beings who create and control fate. This makes them the most terribly powerful entities in the cosmos – more so than even the gods, since the gods are subject to fate just like any and all other beings. According to one description of the Norns in the Old Norse poem Fáfnismál, there are a great many of them, and no one knows the exact number. Some of them come from the gods, others from the elves, and still others from the dwarves. The poem Völuspá, however, has another, grander account of them that has (perhaps deservedly) become the standard image that people today associate with the Norns. Several different images are used for the Norns’ fate-crafting activity throughout Old Norse literature. The three most common are casting wooden lots, weaving a piece of cloth, and carving symbols – likely runes – into wood. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 23: Odin From norse-mythology.org: Odin (pronounced “OH-din”; Old Norse Óðinn, Old English and Old Saxon Woden, Old High German Wuotan, Wotan, or Wodan, Proto-Germanic *Woðanaz, “Master of Ecstasy”) is one of the most complex and enigmatic characters in Norse mythology, and perhaps in all of world literature. He’s the ruler of the Aesir tribe of deities, yet he often ventures far from their kingdom, Asgard, on long, solitary wanderings throughout the cosmos on purely self-interested quests. He’s a relentless seeker after and giver of wisdom, but he has little regard for communal values such as justice, fairness, or respect for law and convention. He’s the divine patron of rulers, and also of outlaws. He’s a war-god, but also a poetry-god, and he has prominent “effeminate” qualities that would have brought unspeakable shame to any historical Viking warrior. He’s worshiped by those in search of prestige, honor, and nobility, yet he’s often cursed for being a fickle trickster.  #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 22: Skadi From norse-mythology.org: Skadi (pronounced “SKAHD-ee;” Old Norse Skaði) is a giantess and goddess in Norse mythology. Her name is either identical with the Old Norse common noun skaði, “harm,” or comes from another Germanic root preserved in the Gothic word skadus and the Old English sceadu, both of which mean “shadow.” Her name is likely related to the name “Scandinavia,” but whether Skadi lent her name to the land-mass or vice versa is uncertain. Skadi lives in the highest reaches of the mountains, where the snow never melts. She’s an avid huntress, and her bow, snowshoes, and skis are her most often-mentioned attributes. She was once married to the god Njord. However, their marriage was a failure; Njord couldn’t stand the cold and dreariness of the mountains, and Skadi couldn’t stand the light and noise of Njord’s home by the seashore, so the two parted ways. The giants (or, to use a word that more properly translates their Old Norse name, the “devourers”) are predominantly forces of darkness, cold, and death. Skadi fits this pattern, and seems to have had particular associations with winter. Her status as a goddess by marriage, however, along with the frequency of her historical worship, seem to suggest that she has a more benevolent demeanor than most of her kin, perhaps in a capacity as a patroness of winter subsistence activities. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 21: Njord From norse-mythology.org: Njord (pronounced “NYORD;” Old Norse Njörðr, whose meaning/etymology is unknown) is one of the principal gods of the Vanir tribe of deities. He’s also an honorary member of the Aesir gods, having been sent to them during the Aesir-Vanir War along with his son, Freyr, and his daughter, Freya. Freyr and Freya’s mother is Njord’s unnamed sister, who, based on linguistic evidence, is probably Nerthus or an equivalent goddess. Njord was particularly associated with wealth, fertility, the sea, and seafaring in the Vikings’ religion. A saying among the Norse peoples held especially wealthy people to be “as rich as Njord.” The tale in which Njord features most prominently is The Marriage of Njord and Skadi. Skadi, a giantess, had come to the Aesir seeking restitution for the slaying of her father. As part of the settlement, they agreed that she could have any of the gods she desired as her husband. She chose Njord by mistake, thinking him to be Baldur. Their marriage was short and unpleasant. Half of their time was spent in Skadi’s home in the snowy mountains, which Njord couldn’t tolerate; the other half was spent in Njord’s home, Nóatún (“The Place of Ships”), which was located on the beach. Skadi couldn’t tolerate Njord’s home, either, so the two parted ways. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 20: Máni From norse-mythology.org: Máni (pronounced MAH-nee) as the name suggests is the divinity of the moon. Máni is male. Sol (the divinity of the sun) and Máni form a sister and brother. When they first emerged as the cosmos was being created, they didn't know what the powers were or what their role was in the new world. Then the gods met together and created the different pots of the day and your and the faces of the moon so that Sol and Máni would know where they fit into the great scheme of things. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london

Day 19: Loki From norse-mythology.org: Loki (pronounced LOAK-ee, meaning knot or tangle) is the wiley trickster god of Norse mythology. While treated as a nominal member of the gods, Loki occupies a highly ambivalent and ultimately unique position among the gods, giants, and the other kinds of spiritual beings that populate the pre-Christian Norse religion. His familial relations attest to this. His father is the giant Farbauti (Cruel Striker). His mother is Laufey or Nal (Needle). Laufey/Nal could be a goddess, a giantess, or something else entirely. Loki is the father, by the giantess Angrboda, of Hel, the goddess of the underworld; Jormungand, the great serpent who slays Thor during Ragnarok; and Fenrir, the wolf who bites off one of the hands of Tyr and who kills Odin during Ragnarok - hardly a reputable brood, to say the least. #inktober #inktober2023 #art #ink #drawing #illustration #sketch #ragnarok #vikings #norse #norsemythology #instainktober #instadrawing #instaink #challenge #london #loki
