“How Did It End?” by Taylor Swift is the SOTW! It was released on April 19th, 2024, written by Taylor and Aaron Dessner, and is track 21 from “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology”. Fav lyric(s): The bridge destroys me the most, especially “My beloved ghost and me, sitting in a tree, D-Y-I-N-G”, because it’s a reference to the rhyme “sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G”. Thoughts: On an album full of intense emotions, I feel that this is the saddest song on it (the piano and the parts where she goes “it’s happening again” and “huh-oh” really adds to it). It’s a great song and I love it so much but it’s so utterly heartbreaking from its first second to its last. It’s no secret that Taylor has experienced a lot of heartbreak in her life and she’s written songs about it, and one of the saddest parts of this song is the chorus. She’s saying how people are always so interested in the details of a breakup and because she just experienced another one, the public’s desire to know what happened re-emerges and yet she’s saying how she herself doesn’t know how it ended. It’s such a double whammy too because not only do you have to deal with the effects of a heartbreaking breakup personally and how that affects you emotionally, but you have to deal with the public and their reaction. They don’t see public figures as human beings, they just see what happens in their lives (including devastating heartbreaks) as “gossip and entertainment”. Her personal life is not a reality show that exists for the purpose of keeping you entertained and I hate that there are people out there that treat it as such. It’s so insensitive and lacks compassion.

TTPD has only been out for a little more than a week, but I firmly believe that it’s the best album she’s ever written. It’s very, dare I say, poetic, and she phrases things in the most eloquent way. There’s so many metaphors, which I love. I was thinking about how she told us on tour something along the lines of how she needed songwriting more than ever when writing it…it shows in the fact that she gave us her biggest album, track number wise, and how unfiltered she was with TTPD shows how much she had to get off her chest. And perhaps having it all out there in the open makes her feel like she’s taking a weight off her shoulders and makes it easier to move past the things she’s singing about. She’s not necessarily framing a story to make it look a certain way like she may have done in the past (think about how some of the vault songs in the re-records have given more detail and perspective to that time in her life Ex: Red TV and 1989 TV), she just said exactly how everything was, no matter how it may make her look to some people. It’s what I believe is her most honest album. And idk if it’s just me but I feel like with the way TTPD is written, it’s something you have to listen to at least a few times to fully digest it all. Because there is a lot going on in it.

Time to bring back this game and with a brand new album released last week, it’s only gotten more difficult 😅😂 (btw, there’s no way I’m expecting anyone to only pick one, so no worries about it) I think what I’ll do for each one is give my top 3, so for track 1, it would be “Mine”, RFI, and “Lavender Haze”.
