One of the original establishments in the quaint Point Reyes town of Olema, the Farm House Restaurant and Bar, located at Sir Francis Drake Blvd. and Highway 1, first opened its doors to wagoneers and travelers in 1870. By 1962, Clay and Emma Wright were the proprietors of this landmark property and ran Clay’s Farm House and Inn six years. In December of 1968, they sold it to Jerry and Agnes Bunce and renamed it Jerry’s Farm House. For more than 20 years, it was a welcome fixture, especially the historic bar. And, who could resist the Thanksgiving feast? In November 1971, the price was $4.50 for a full dinner (half price for children 12 and under). By 1975, it was up to $5.00 for a full dinner. Running the farm house was a family affair with Jerry and Agnes’ children helping out over the years. They sold it in 1990 and this special place has since had a variety of reincarnations. It may not be known that the farm house had its 15 minutes of fame…it served as one of the locations for the 1980 horror flick “The Fog” – the follow-up to the 1978 slasher film Halloween staring Jamie Lee Curtis and Adrienne Barbeau. The fictitious town of ‘Port Antonio’ is Point Reyes Station along with filming at Jerry’s Farm House Restaurant. And, given the title, it worked out well that Pt. Reyes is the second foggiest place in America (Nantucket Island is the first). According to a 2017 article in Marin Magazine, Director John Carpenter explained, “We shot at a restaurant called Jerry’s Farmhouse…a delightful place to go and eat.” He went on to praise the West Marin area. “This is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire world – Point Reyes, California, and Inverness,” says Carpenter. “I fell in love with the place, so much so that I bought a house.” Photographs: (1) Postcard of Jerry’s Farm House c. 1970’s, MHM Collection. The back of this postcard describes Jerry’s Farm House like this: “Through the rum-running skullduggery of the prohibition era, to the development of Pt. Reyes National Seashore, Jerry’s has long been a prominent fixture in coastal Main County. Built in 1870, it is the sole survivor of the nine saloons and hotel built that once flourished in Olema.” One of the original establishments in the quaint Point Reyes town of Olema, the Farm House Restaurant and Bar, located at Sir Francis Drake Blvd. and Highway 1, first opened its doors to waggoners and travelers in 1870.
