About 5 minutes before getting to #3 Kamioka Inari Shrine (神岡稲荷神社) the skies opened up on me and I had to take it from a walk to a sprint about a half kilometer. A quiet shrine, I didn’t have a chance to really get a good look around with the rain. #4 Takahagi Arakawa Hachimangu (高萩安良川八幡宮). This place was really nice. Went here last summer as well, but due to Covid restrictions I couldn’t enter the premises without a mask (I was out for a run when I stopped by last year and could only really see the entrance area). Last year, I did the Kamitama Shrine Pilgrimage around my old stomping grounds in Iwaki, Fukushima. Turns out there’s one similar for the Hitachi/Takahagi/ Kitaibaraki area. So yeah… of course, I’m in. All in all, hit up #10 through #5 in reverse order, walking the entire way. 15+ miles (24.5km) in total 🥵 To start, I trained down to Ōmika Station and walked to Ōmika Shrine (大甕神社). Last couple shrines on the pilgrimage, one of which I went to on Sunday ( #10 Kunitama Shrine). Trained up to Nakoso Station and rode a taxi to Seto-Machi in the mountains, where #9 Mayumi Shrine was located. Long climb to the top of a tall ass set of dew-slick stairs, and then a more dangerous climb back down lol Then walked a few miles to #10 Kunitama Shrine (while listening to @kreweofjapanpodcast’s new episode on New Orleans food in Japan featuring @eatbno… #shamelessplug) to get the kamitama & goshuin before heading back to the station. The last stop of the day for the pilgrimage was #5 Kotohira Shrine (金刀比羅神社) in Yumoto. This shrine hosts a pretty big festival (by Iwaki small town standards) every year on January 10 called Konpira-sama Festival (金毘羅様祭り or sometimes called 初金毘羅). While nice to visit whenever (only about a mile from Onsen Shrine and even closer to Yumoto Station), I’d definitely recommend visiting for the festival! The pilgrimage next brought me back to Yumoto, my old home during my JET days. After stopping in the Wai Wai Shop outside the station for a beer and fried chicken sandwich, I headed to #4 Onsen Shrine (温泉神社), literally Hot Spring Shrine. To contextualize, Yumoto is a hot spring town with plenty of resorts & hot springs around.
