This morning, I was told by some locals to visit the "true" Hawaiian beaches at Kailua and Lanikai if I wanted to experience what awesone beaches are all about. Took about 45min to get there from Waikiki and when I reached, I was completely blown away by how beautiful and pristine the waters were. It was by far one of the best I ever seen! The view was so gorgeous that I forgot all about fishing as I strolled up and down the beach. It was only when my son reminded me just before we were about to leave that I decided to do some fishing. Seeing how clean and clear the water were, I wasn't sure if there's going to be any fish so near the shore. And being a BFS angler, I was completely ill-equipped for shore fishing especially when the head wind was strong and the lures I had were small and I couldn't cast far as a result. Then, remembering some YT videos I watched where the anglers actually waddled and fished in the shallow sandy beaches and caught fishes. So maybe, there are fish that are not easily spooked and would swim near shore. I decided to take my chances and try casting as far as I could with the best-casting hardbody lure in my box - Ima Komono 2. Second cast barely 10 metres from the shore saw this juvenile Barracuda smashed the lure from the shallow water like.a champ and sent my Zephyr clicker screaming. After a short fight, I landed what the locals called a "Kaku" I think. After this catch it was time to head back to Waikiki. Wish I had started earlier and had a shore-casting spinning setup and some heavy duty poppers. I suspect there are some biggies lurking beneath these shallow pristine waters in Hawaii. Fishing is always tough at legal grounds, especially with more otters around. Gone are the days when I could catch a few good sized fish in one session. These two days, the fish were extra finicky and choosy. Threw all sort of lures from topwater, metal vib, to hardbody lures but nothing happened. Instead, they preferred the simple carolina rig with soft plastics. Just a small sinker and a hook rigged with a wriggly rubber! I eat my words. 85mm floating pencil does work at this spot! I just have to retrieve really slowly and pause. Fishing was tough at my usual spot the past week. Firing blanks day after day. The fish just weren't biting. Not sure why exactly but I suspect it could be due to the bigger floating pencil I was using. At 85mm, it was probably too big for this pressured spot. The optimal floating lure size here is between 55 and 65mm, which I ran out. The air was still and the water calm at Bedok Reservoir. It was barely 6am when I started fishing. I was hoping for a productive session, but seeing how quiet it was I knew it was going to be a tough session. By daybreak, I could hardly see any activity on the water surface. Be that as it may, I did what I could and switched between the popper and floating pencil lure. Both did not entice any strikes. As a last resort, I turned to the 5 gram Storm GX Ultra Blade. This tiny metal lure has proven to be lethal at this spot especially when the going gets tough. The vibration it sets off underwater is enough to tempt even the laziest fish to have a go. During one of these slow retrieves, I felt the lure had hit a snag. But instinct tells me to strike which I did. Then the "snag" came off and as I reeled the line in it felt heavy. I still didn't think it was a fish. It was only barely 5 metres from me where the line started to pull and the fish started fighting. The fish was landed shortly. Wasn't a typical hard Zebra Tilapia fight as one would expect but still a good one on bfs. Finally made my maiden kayak trip to the mangroves and I was humbled. I was expecting it to be an easy session with all nice Barramundi trapped in the calm and shallow water waiting to be caught. But the tide was high the most day, which wasn't ideal. I went through the tackle box and tried everything from soft plastics, hardbody lures to jigs. Zero bites. The mangroves terrain was so serene and welcoming that I had almost forgotten that I was in Singapore. After what seened like an eternity, while vertically jigging in water no more than 3m, I had such a strong take that it sent my tiny rod bending into the water and snapped my 6lb leader instantly! I had absolutely no chance of even setting the hook! And that was the only take in the mangroves before the fishing guide brought me around the nearby kelongs to hunt for Mangrove Jacks and Barramundi. The weather was not on our side. The wind was strong throughout the day and the water choppy. We did our best with the kayaks and jigging at the same time. At about 3pm, when I was about to call it a zero-fighter day, I scored two snappers in fairly quick succession. Then, I had another massive take that snapped the leader again. Again, I had no chance of even setting the hook! (I am so going to bring a heavier setup for the next session!) Just when I thought it was probably not a day for Barramundi, the fishing guide showed me what it meant to be a pro and why experience local terrain knowledge is important. He scored 3 good sized Barramundi and a nice snapper on jigs at the same area where I was fishing!! Breaking the week-long dry spell this morning with two nice topwater takes. Today's lure of the day is the best-in-class Duo Realis pencil. Walking the dog with this lure almost guarantees a catch if the fish is there. With a straightforward retrieval, the lure works itself and rattles on the water surface, sending vibrations throughout the water columns. This morning, both fish struck the lure with so much ferocity that I almost lost my grip. Yesterday's evening saltwater session at the jetty. Used the same Kastking Zephyr setup as the morning session that caught me two peacock bass. Not sure if Zephyr was ever saltwater rated but I have been using it in both fresh and saltwater applications and so far so good. The ceramic ball bearings are still working fine, no rust (even though I seldom maintain beyond rinsing it with water), and the drag still performs well. At the price point, and given how often I use and how versatile this setup is, I would say its good value for money. Anyway, back to the CR. It was a popper-fly session again but this time, I self-tied a smaller hook instead of using a treble. I wanted to increase the hook-up rate and see if the smaller hook tied with materials I cut from a bucktail jig actually makes a difference. Well, the result was amazing. The fish just couldn't resist the popper and the small fly and I caught many. Meanwhile, many anglers beside me were catching a good amount of Sagais, but the thing is these were "mid-water" fish and my popper-fly, for some reason, just couldn't lure them to the water surface to have a go at the fly. So I ended up with the usual needlescaled queenfish and what-nots. I resisted the temptation of catching the Sagais and pressed on with topwater fishing with the popper-fly, hoping that a bigger size pelagic would give the popper-fly a shot. True enough, during one of tbose "pops", the popper-fly was able to lure a Queenie to near surface and entice an aggressive take and sent my tiny Zephyr setup screaming instantly. At the jetty's height, fighting any pelagics with a bfs or ul setup, is a sheer challenge and joy. The Queenie tried to dive underneath the jetty and the line almost got cut, but thankfully the rod and Fireline were strong enough to withstand the resistance. This morning, the water was still and murky, probably due to the heavy rain yesterday. Decided to use a hardbody sinking lure since it has been awhile I did that. I chose the fast sinking Rapala Shadow Rap Solid Shad. With its wild action and side flash everytime I twitch, I was hoping that the lure could entice the lethargic fish to strike in such dull water condition. Like the topwater Duo Realis pencil, the fast sinking Rapala Shadow Rap never disappoints. From West Coast Park to East Coast Park. Caught nothing in the west after an hour and quickly made my way to the east. West coast park wasn't easy at all. Being my first time there, I had no idea of the terrain and what to expect or how to fish. There was no angler at all beside me. The east was a completely different story. The jetty was bustling with anglers especially for a Monday. Not sure why but I reckoned it was probably a good day to fish here. After my last successful topwater popper-fly experience here, I decided to try that again and focus on using that lure this session. The tide was rising, the weather hot, and the baitfish active. A good sign for topwater popping. Sure enough, the popping sound made all the fish go frenzy. They were chasing all over the popper and the fly. It was a matter of time before one of the bigger fish commits and the first one to do so was the needlescaled queenfish and followed by the rest. More could have landed if I had used a much smaller single-hook fly. I was hoping for a big pelagic to hit the popper-fly but it didn't happen. Hey guys! In this video, I’ll be talking about some of the pros and cons I’ve found with the Haibo Arise Air. I also wanted to address one piece of news that I forgot to mention in that Haibo is the OEM for a reel sold by a U.S. based company called Ark. They call their reels Gravity and have a few reels in this line. Due to this, I do not believe that Haibo will be selling the Arise line of reels in the US as the two share the exact same braking system. Caught nothing at the jetty where the water was deeper. But as luck would have it, I walked past a water breaker as I was calling it a day and heading back to the car. I recalled reading an interesting article last night about fishing at one of these breakers, which were "infested" with groupers. I thought I should have a go for what it's worth. I was careful to bounce the treble-hooked micro jig slowly and carefully around the rocks. And when the take happened, I thought it was a grouper. Alas, it was another Spanish Flag.
