"When you leave here, you truly are an alumnus, and they would do anything for you, and I think that's the best part about UT," says Alvin Robertson. Robertson, a therapeutic recreation major from Memphis, developed close relationships with his advisors who helped him settle into life at UT. "They just showed me the way, how to get more involved, and when you get more involved, you kind of just run into people that have things in common with you." He took advantage of Supplemental Instruction through the UT Academic Success Center to get help with his chemistry class. And then he began to help others as a teaching assistant for anatomy courses. Robertson loved his time as a teaching assistant, helping others and empowering them. As a high school senior, Robertson was awarded a Flagship Scholarship, which helps students from certain high schools in Tennessee pay for their tuition and fees. "That scholarship was a game changer. It helped me to not have to pay for a lot of things that I would pay for if I didn't have the scholarship." Robertson says. The scholarship was one of the major factors in his decision to come to UT. In spring 2023, Robertson joined a Greek Life fraternity, giving him the opportunity to grow as a leader. "I recently got out of my position for the second vice regional director for the Southeastern Conference, and that is over East Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina," he says. "That truly made me a better leader in the sense of just understanding what college students need." For Robertson, being a Vol is being a part of a family. "UT truly embodies being there for people," he says. "When you come here, you're going to be set up for success-whether that's from your mentors, your professors, or your advisors-they truly just want you to succeed in this world." Robertson plans to go to graduate school to earn his master's degree in education. "I just want to be a voice for students, like my mentors were for me." #KRSS #UTKnoxville #GBO #UTGrad24

KRSS would like to wish Partners in Sports a Happy 26th Birthday! To celebrate, we have posted a photo of Haywood Harris, Buck Jones, and Gus Manning from 2008. Buck created the Adidas Partners in Sports program in 1997 for the sole purpose of generating funds to create more and better opportunities for students in the Sport Management program. Today, Partners in Sports is the student organization for Sport Management majors and other students at the University of Tennessee who are interested in pursuing careers in the sport or recreation industry. The mission of the organization is to create opportunities for tomorrow’s sports leaders through practical experiences and professional development opportunities. Harris served UT as Sports Information Director, Assistant Athletics Director, and Associate Athletics Director of Media Relations, and Manning served in an array of roles varying from Business Manager to Senior Associate Athletic Director. All three of of these men played an important part in UT history. Greg Blankenship, one of our KRSS SCUBA instructors, travelled to Key West, Florida to train Fire and Police department dive teams. Instructor Blankenship as part of a team of NAUI instructors from Florida, California, and Tennessee led an intensive five-day NAUI Public Safety Diver Certification Course. This comprehensive course encompasses advanced diving techniques, search patterns, victim rescue and recovery, evidence preservation and collection, vessel hull inspections, risk assessments, and emergency response procedures tailored to the specific challenges encountered by public safety divers. Thanks to the training conducted by the team of NAUI instructors that included Instructor Blankenship, Key West Fire and Police Department divers are now prepared to conduct joint underwater operations. Instructor Blankenship shows that no matter where you are, Volunteers are making an impact in local communities. KRSS took a trip to visit Camp Koinonia (“kwan-a-nee-yah”)! Camp Koinonia is a non-profit, outdoor education program that serves campers ages 7-21 with multiple disabilities. During the first year of the program, a counselor/camper duo submitted the winning name for the program – Camp Koinonia. Koinonia (“kwan-a-nee-yah”) comes from the Greek and means “fellowship” and “caring community.” The purpose and mission of Camp Koinonia has been to provide a “caring community” for our campers in a sense of true “fellowship.” It is also said of Camp Koinonia that this is “an experience that will last a lifetime,” which has proven true for hundreds of individuals over the years. This service-learning and experiential education opportunity is available to University of Tennessee students across campus. A three credit-hour class meets every Thursday in the spring to prepare for their week at camp. Look out for more Camp Koinonia and TR posts in the near future!🧡 #KRSS #UTKnoxville #CEHHS #KRSSTR
