This is my second jersey I made from the reference in my last post. A lot more intricate this time with criss crossing lines and places where the fabrics came to a 4-way pinch. I kept the raglan sleeve and the split hem at the bottom. This time I went to a pattern maker that just made the patterns and samples. I had taken a sewing and pattern making class a couple years prior and decided it would be better to just pay the pros as I wouldn’t have the time to get good enough for where i wanted to be… though looking back I definitely had enough time lol as this was made in 2021 in Dallas. I had moved to Dallas in 2017 to get my masters in data science (pony up!) and in 2021 I had found some new found free time so decided to try and make my clothing line again. The soccer fashion line was still as relevant in my head as when I first thought of it so lets give it another go. Dallas wasn’t necessarily the place to make it, but confirmed my thought that being where its made at least in the beginning was important. I also confirmed that I 100% needed to source my fabric next time.

This was the second sample of the first design that I made (see my previous post). I remember finding a pattern maker In LA off of us Makers Row, great resource if you looking for, well, resources to make something. The problem was that I was living in San Jose at the time and they were in LA. Not too far in the grand scheme of things but I quickly learned it would be important for me (at least in the beginning) to live where my clothing was being made. Phone calls and zooms just didn’t work for me. I needed to be able to hold it and see it in real life. And honestly, probably best if I could just make it myself. The fabric was bad to put in nicely, the pattern was meh, and the construction was bad at best as you can see the the excess fabric in the pentagon since it doesn’t lay flat…. and the collar was full bacon neck. I ironed it for the photo, but put it on and it just goes all over the place. I can't stand a floppy neck line. After this experience, I also learned that a one stop shop wouldn’t work. I needed a specialist. Someone that just made the pattern and sample. Someone else to source the materials (aka me). Then find someone else to manufacture it. But hey, this was the first crack at it and to be fair, I know now that I didn’t give the clearest direction for the pattern or for fabric to be used so overall I chalked it up to a good learning experience. Can’t believe I was able to dig up the first shirt I ever made. And i gotta say, the pit stains aged like a fine wine lol. So this is my first design - I decided to design this first shirt based off of the basic pattern of a soccer ball. A pentagon surrounded by 5 hexagons. The pentagon would be centered in the upper back under the collar. The first two hexagons aka panels would split the back, one panel for each sleeve, and one panel for the front. then to finish and give it a nice soccer touch I used an over lapping collar. I don’t remember what the black markings are that I drew on the back of the shirt but this is it. No idea on fabric, or seams, or anything. I just thought it would be cool to make a fashion line based on soccer. Back in 2014 when I made this, I was thinking supreme but soccer. Ralph Lauren but soccer. Something just at the core of what the sport is. The closest thing to the emotion that I was trying to capture was Kappa or Umbro. When I was in middle school and high school and would wear one of their shirts or shorts it felt like I knew something others didn’t. Like I was true to the culture of soccer. It felt like they were brands that only soccer players knew. So I set out to make my version. I had no idea where to start and ended up discovering the Jeff Staples street wear course on SkillShare. Many years ago, I stopped eating meat. After some time we gave up fish. This fall I gave up fish, dairy, eggs. That’s how we became vegans. I’ve been fasting for the last five days. I’m coming out of it now. I’ve been on herbal tea. I’ve lost weight. I’ve lost four or five pounds. I feel great. My weight is 55 kilograms. I’m so happy with myself, I feel so good.
