MS Awareness Week 2024 runs from 22 - 28 April. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects your brain and spinal cord. In MS, the coating that protects your nerves (myelin) is damaged. This causes a range of symptoms like blurred vision and problems with how we move, think, and feel. More than 130,000 people in the UK have MS. In the UK people are most likely to find out they have MS in their thirties, forties and fifties. But the first signs of MS often start years earlier. Many people notice their first symptoms years before they get their diagnosis. The specific symptoms that appear depend on which part of your central nervous system has been affected, and the job of the damaged nerve. MS affects almost three times as many women as men. MS can also predispose patients to other conditions such as Trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia is a kind of nerve pain which can cause stabbing or burning sensations down the side of the face, usually on one side only. The pain may only last seconds or minutes but may repeat many times during an attack. For some people the pain is always present. It can be excruciatingly painful. In people who do not have MS, it is most often caused by a blood vessel pressing on the Trigeminal Nerve (CNV). This can also occasionally happen in people with MS so it can be important to determine the cause of the pain before considering treatment options. In MS, Trigeminal Neuralgia is most often caused by damage to the myelin sheath around the trigeminal nerve. At the National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery, we have over 35 years experience of offering radiosurgery as an effective treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia. Following a consultation with one of our experienced Radiosurgeons and Therapeutic Radiographers, we are able to create an individualised treatment pathway. On the treatment day our team are able to accurately target the trigeminal nerve.
