I was banging my head against the wall on how to solve oil cooling on my Turbo Touring… because nothing on the market is made for my engine except of Mocal adapter plate, which is tricky for routing oil lines of the plate. Managed to port it on Sunday, will sand blast the inside, just to be sure, no splatter balls or sugaring (highly unlikely, but it is possible in case of impurities in cast bends and T pieces). Soooo… this is kinda bitter sweet moment. I was hoping for a different outcome on the position of turbo flange but… this is literally the only possible position of TD05 20G for rear bottom mount. But at least I’m gonna get rid of the scavanging system and use gravity drain only. 💪🏼 I would wish for merge piping to turbo flange to be shorter, or non existent but… I made the best I could. Log manifold update… did the “merge” part tonight. That’s also last thing I can do without bolting manifold onto engine in a car so I can position the turbo (it’s quite bigger than TD04) and do the rest then. Work in progress…but mocked up log manifold yesterday I had in my mind for so long. It’s coming along pretty nice! 😍 I have another T piece, which is a bit larger and matches the new TD05 20G turbo inlet flange hole. That T piece will be placed in the center of manifold but it’s orientation is unknown until I put the manifold on the head in the car. Something new is cooking. 😜 Let’s say this is more of a long-ish term side project. It’s gonna be a log type of manifold... yes it’s not ideal, but I’m not chasing numbers... I want to make this turbo engine reliable... and with reliable I mean I want to get rid of the oil return scavange system and just run gravity drain instead. Same place different car, same fiasco-ish. 🤣 Well it was not a total failure... I did drift, engine ran fine (no overheating at all), has some decent power for a small 4 banger, car is pretty gripped but predictable. Let me get to the fail part... I have a vent to oil catch can from my turbo oil return scavange tank... well obviously my scavange pump was not able to suck the oil when oil splashed to one side mid corner... oil had to go somewhere, right? Yeah... all over the engine bay on drivers side thru oil catch can. Reason why I had to finish after 3 laps, unfortunately. I’ll be fixing that and will hit the track again in few weeks. 💪🏼 Also pictures were made in favour of my new companionship with @ustil.si, will be rocking more of his stuff soon... as something new is cooking on his side. So I managed to flatten it out t o 0.015mm at the lowest point (right on the outside) measured with automotive straight edge tool and feeler gauge (it was over 0.05mm all around before and close to the center of the cover... so it was bevelled quite a lot). FINALLY! I got my ported head back from machine shop. They did 3 angle grind on valve seats and corrected the contact edge on valves. This will result in much better airflow... which means it should be able to produce more hrsprs at same boost. I really don’t want to push the boost level any higher than 1.2 bar (according to my research my TD04L is only efficient until 1.2 bar). I also had to resize my bolt/dovel pin holes on my head gasket as I went with M12 studs instead of M10. But I bet it’s gonna be worth the wait, which is going on for 3 weeks now. 😬 On the picture you can see that not much was needed to make the ports very decent. Pistons are in... I put in my used pistons, as there is really no reason on using new or forged pistons for the power and boost I’m aiming for. I haven’t been posting much in last few weeks again. 😬 There’s a reason... I didn’t do much on my projects... why? I was “last one standing” at work, others were all out for 2 weeks due Corona virus or quarantine. So I did some overtime at work... and didn’t do any major progress on my own shiet. Also I had to rebuild two differentials for @dejanfakuc from @defaracing and @nikpolc and his restomoded E34 525i. Anyway here is painted and flex-honed (600 grit) turbo engine block ready to assemble it (I’m waiting for con rod bolts)... but I will drop pistons with new piston rings in while I wait for rod bolts (I broke one 2nd compression ring while removing them for cleaning the ring lands on pistons). #driftliciousgang #driftliciousgang #turbo #m43turbo #turbobuild #e36turbo
