💅Nail salons + "the nail industry" as we know it were set in motion in 1975 when Vietnamese women in a Cali refugee camp complimented actress/philanthropist #TippiHedren on her red nails. At the time, manicures were offered mainly at upscale full-service salons. Only elites, wealthy Americans could afford to get their nails done. 🤔 Tippi thought... manicuring could be a path for Vietnamese refugee women to make a living & assimilate into American culture. She brought her personal manicurist to train a group of 20 women, then found a beauty school to sponsor their education to get licensed. These 20 worked to open their oen family salons, employing community members; sponsoring visas to help folks back home immigrate to the US in pursuit of "the American promise of liberty." Suddenly, manicures were affordable & accessible to the average American woman: the market boomed. Vietnamese immigrant labor opened the market then filled the ever growing demand. Hence, approx 50% of US salons today are owned by Viet-Americans. 👭Charlie Vo (Vietnamese manicurist) & Olivett Robinson (Black American hairstylist) were the first salon co-owners to set up a nail shop in "the hood." Their salon, The ManTrap became a popular salon quickly as Black women took the opportunity to show their personal style w/ acrylic nails + art. Charlie Vo pioneered airbrushing on nails, encapsulated snakeskin, rhinestone embellishments & more. They quickly expanded into a local chain of 9 "ManTrap" salons. 🤓 I will record & post a video with the fully story (I wasn't satisfied w/ the live I just did); but I wanted to share this quick version that captures the reason why @naptownnailpro exists: EMPOWERMENT THRU UNITY!!!! Let's return to the spirit of sisterhood & collaboration that MADE NAILS POP OFF IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!! ☠️Dia de Los Muertos meets the Pop Art trend 💡Client request inspired freestyle for the queen @chi.boss.lady ⏱This took me a surprisingly long time, like 2 hours to paint 😅 The surpringly time consuming aspect was mixing the colors for the "shadows" of each nail, and getting a nice clean outline *without* flooding the cuticle. Also.... the skull's teeth 😬 very tedious. If ai had another 30 mins I would have outlines the floral details on the calavera 😆 #manilawanna
