This mandala features the things commonly associated with the country – windmills, blue and white tiles (toile) from Delft, tulips – all beautifully created with needle, thread, beads and crystals. Dawn stitched this piece for a friend who loves those tulips and toile. They had been looking at various designs on the site and this one just sang to her. Part way through stitching this, Dawn had to move house and then, just before moving day, a rare tornado came by and hit both her old and new house! Things had to go on hold for a short while but once she restarted, there was no stopping her. Showing an Indian temple from ancient times, set in a lake overgrown by beautiful lotus flowers... Ingeborg was fortunate enough to travel to India and Nepal back in 2005. During the trip, she spent a few weeks in Rajasthan, falling in love with the people, culture, colours, architecture and food. If you have always wanted to stitch a Châtelaine but are a bit intimidated by the size and complexity, there is a series of Workshop designs which give you the chance to practise speciality stitches and create something beautiful at the same time. That’s how Katie Ten Eyck felt, so when she found these designs, she really went to town creating one large piece featuring all of the designs. As she stitched them, her confidence grew so Workshops 1 and 2 were stitched with all the called for materials but she swapped out some threads for Workshops 3 and 4. By the time she got to the final two Workshop designs, she created her own ‘mash up’, combining them into one design using materials she had in her stash as the centre piece of the whole sampler. 🌸 Châtelaine Designs: 1. A stunning mandala that moves outward from the trees and plants on our own planet, into the skies seeing comets, stars and asteroids onto the planets we know and hints of the galaxies beyond. The planets are stitched over one thread which give a deeper level of detail and there are many specialist stitches to challenge you. Val Thomas obviously wanted an extra challenge by stitching this on black evenweave. Not all Chatelaine designs are mandalas, though they are so popular, you could be forgiven for thinking so! The Splendids series were inspired by antique brocade fabrics in rich colours with both dark and light designs. There are two blue designs and two green designs, each one is different. The Mini Mandalas are a great way to start your Châtelaine journey if you are feeling a bit intimidated by the larger designs. A large and intricate design, this piece may be a challenge to stitch but Sue believes it has to be the prettiest Châtelaine as it has so many beads set against very pretty pastel stitching. You have the option to stitch the beautiful hummingbirds ‘over one’, as Sue did giving depth of colour and detail, or there are also instructions to stitch them ‘over two’ if you don’t want to strain your eyes too much!
