The 2nd XV clinch Merit Table in nail biter at Quorn! Running out onto a pitch devoid of markings led to a delay, but a quick trip to B&Q to buy paint and a quick marking up and we were off. Moderns began strongly dominating the scrums and line outs. Tries from Jez, Skinner, Ollie, Nick and Will C and 3 conversions from Jez had us bonus point and win seemingly in the bag! A couple of well taken tries by Quorn had the score at 14-31 at half time. A comfortable lead one would think. Expecting more of the same Moderns fans were to be disappointed as the second half saw Quorn stage a bit of a comeback despite a red card and if it hadn’t been for a stunning move by James Dabin who scored under the posts to secure the win con by Jez it could have been a tragedy. PLAYERS OF THE MONTH 🏅MARCH 1st XV: Elliott Dobson 2nd XV: James Dabin Colts: Reuben Tao (In slide order) Colts: Reuben Tao Due to school rugby commitments, Reuben wasn’t able to play many games pre Christmas for us; but what an impact he had made on his return full time since January at both blind and open side flanker. An absolute menace to opposing teams at the breakdown, Reuben is also a strong and committed tackler when it comes to contact work. He also has an eye for the try line when the opportunity arises and has found himself on the score sheet at crucial times in big games. His performances have been rewarded with selection to the NLD Colts u17s squad - Congratulations Reuben! 2nd XV: James Dabin James joined mid way through the season and soon began to make himself part of the squad. A hard running centre that has proved to be an asset in both attack and defence. He is a confident, upbeat kind of guy and his performances for the 2nd XV have been crucial to our recent performances and wins. Well done James 👏 1st XV: Elliott Dobson Elliot joined the club this season, having had a couple of years away from playing rugby and since joining, he impressed both at training and for the second team. Since making his 1st team debut on a Friday night against our pals Ashby, he’s got better and better every game. In the last month (March) he’s shown his value in defence, as well as how good he is in attack. He picked up his 1st try for the club last month, made a disgusting break against rivals Casuals and was only stopped from scoring a belter on Saturday (Ashbourne HOME) by having to pull his shorts up after getting kegged in a tackle. It should be noted that his best performances have come when his girlfriend has been down watching, so we reckon he’s just trying to show off. Moderns took the field ready to get back to their winning ways after the narrow defeat to Bingham last weekend. Playing with the wind Moderns got off to a great start running in 3 converted tries in the first 20 minutes. At 21-0 thinks were looking good for the men in red, however a peculiar malaise struck the 2’s who seemed to forget about line speed or how to tackle, this allowed Leesbrook to stage a comeback and the half ended with the score 21-14. Subs were brought on at the start of the second half and playing into the wind Moderns prepared for a half of long kicks from Leesbrook. Surprisingly this did not materialise and Moderns remembered how to defend and more crucially to counter attack. A series of tries were scored from distance as well as short range and Mods ran out 52-14 winners! PLAYERS OF THE MONTH 🏅FEBRUARY 1st XV: Sonnie Swann 2nd XV: Noah Texier-Salter Colts: Connor Hood 1st XV: Sonnie Swann In the 1st half of the season, Sonnie was in and out of the 1ST XV, playing the majority of games in the 2nd XV. After being dropped from the 1s for a few weeks, what impressed me most was that he was always asking what he can do in games and training to get back in the 1ST XV, and if you know Sonnie the fact that he could have a serious conversation is as surprising as anything. He’s always been brilliant in defence, punching way above his weight with the way he tackles, but used to lack ability going forward. Since impressing in training both with performance and attitude, he got a deserved return to the 1s for a crucial game against fellow promotion contenders Melton. He defended brilliantly all game and when given a chance in the last play, secured the bonus point. In the month following, he scored 6 tries in 5 games, massively contributing towards the brilliant run the 1ST XV are on. Couldn’t be happier for Sonnie’s turnaround this season and I think everyone would agree he’s deserving of POTM. He is liderwally the goat. 2nd XV: Noah Texier-Salter Another Ex Colt, Noah has put in consistently good performances in both attack and defence this season. Impressive in training every week and the ability to rapidly bounce back from injury he has made the scrum half position his in the 2nd team. A worthy player of the month for February! Playing into the teeth of a howling gale and Bingham playing a hard running game Moderns we’re in for a real game on Saturday. Traditionally Moderns made their slow start and conceded a penalty and 3 tries (2x converted) despite defending well. The attack was faltering until Oisin Gaffney (con Jez Housden) crossed the line for Mods to end the half 22-7. The second half saw Moderns score through Ed Skinner (conv missed) to make it 22-12. With 15 mins to go Fabian Simpson broke the line and offloaded to Ross Carty who was dragged to the ground agonisingly short of the line. Tremendous support running from James Dabin allowed him to snatch the ball and score under the posts (con Jez Housden) to make the score 22-19. In the dying minutes an immense kick gave Moderns a 5m line out, a catch and drive seemed to be about to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat but it was not to be as Bingham disrupted and ended the match as victors. The 2nd XV advance in the cup (AWO - East Leake unable to field a team) in a game that ended up being played at home anyways! A bizarre day for the 2nd XV. The East Leake pitch was unplayable so the match was moved to Moderns for East Leake to then inform us they only had 7 players and had asked Long Eaton to help fill the gaps so a game could be played, even though the fixture had already been conceded. A changed 2’s side (due to half term) was ready to take the field but firstly had to mark the pitch themselves to ensure the game went ahead 🤣🎨 A strong Bingham side took control from the start and scored 2 tries, 1 conversion and a penalty to lead 0-15 at half time. Moderns could not seem to finish any of their plays until a kick through led to a tackle off the ball on Raoul de Souza - Penalty Try and yellow card and the score was 7-15. It was not long until James Dabin crossed the line for Moderns (conversion missed) to make it 12-15. Injury to Ben Bailey forced a change to the Moderns line up and Nat Shaw moved from the wing to flank. With minutes to go a loose ball was snaffled by the rampaging Shaw who burst through the line to score a try converted by Jez ‘Thunderfoot’ Housden and Moderns led 19-15. 4th win on the bounce ✅ Two early try’s from driving mauls (Poole and Penalty) set the tone for the red dogs as they edged out Derby. The defence was unreal all game from the men in red, as a Lewis Bradley try off the back of another maul stretched the lead out to 17-3 in the second half. Derby struck back to ensure a tense last twenty minutes, made even more tense by the on field captains decision to push for a bonus point with 6 minutes to play, with only one score in it. Good job the sideline supported this decision as Sonnie Swann crossed the try line in the corner to secure the win and the bonus point, sparking Jose Mourinho-esque celebrations from Popey. Moderns 2nd XV go on a try fest vs Mansfield III in the Cup, walking away with an 86-5 victory 🏆 At times, Moderns were a scoring machine with 7 try scorers running in 14 tries. Mansfield (who started a man down) had no answer to the wide play of the men in red and white but did manage a try to their credit but it was a blip in the Moderns performance. Mods still tried to unsettle themselves by going down to 13 men (2 yellows for offside) just as Mansfield went up to full strength but Moderns continued to dominate. Positives were many, quality support running, handling and defence were really impressive.
