I was thinking, while photographing this new little fam, how important my questionnaires are! When you book in, I send out a questionnaire asking you what you wish for, what you want and don't want for your upcoming newborn session and it's honestly the KEY to happiness. Even though people ultimately book me for my style, they still have different priorities for their session. Some parents don't want to be in the photos at all, some will do anything for a gorgeous sibling shot, and some want to just capture that connection. So before these guys came in, I read their questionnaire answers and they wanted: - Natural baby and family photos. - the focus to be on family connection, natural photos rather than posed looks. Particularly the photos in your gallery that show the parents holding/looking at the baby rather than the camera. - Prefer the look of close up family photos rather than full body/from a distance. - neutral colours This was so helpful and isn't totally the norm of what I would do, so letting me KNOW what they wanted change their session for them. Most of the time I do around 5 posed setups of the baby and one family setup, but now knowing what they wanted, I changed my setups to reflect what they wanted. It's still me, it's still my style, but the focus is on what THEY wanted, not my usual or standard process. It's so important to communicate to the photographer what you want, EVEN if it really is just 'do your thing'. I want to give you your vision, so that simple questionnaire really goes a long way. Aaand there's also a bit of a bonus in having been doing this for 11 years now - even a slight change of setup isn't a huge deal because I've tried it all already! Sometimes captions are really hard. I have sat at my computer for a while now trying to think of something thought provoking, or something to spark inspiration in not only myself but you! Anticipation. Waiting. Soon to be a family of 3. ____________________ I found the last few days/weeks the hardest. Not so much physically, but mentally. Especially with Cooper. We had no end date in sight for him. I waited for my body and him to decide when the time was right. With Grace, I was the opposite. Pregnancy with her was physically harder. She was happy chilling out breech up until 36/37 weeks. My hips and pelvis were in constant pain any time I walked, tried to get off the ground, and run around after a toddler who didn't give 2 shits if I was in pain or not lol. I was more than happy to be induced by the end of my pregnancy! Basking in that winter sunshine! Midday shoots during winter are a low key vibe though, aren't they? Anyways, I was recently doom scrolling IG and I came across a reel that showed a mum and her tween daughter. Mum was describing how fun it is to have kids her age and it caught me off guard a little bit. You see, I am SO FAR DOWN in the trenches. I have a 1 and a 2 year old and when I tell you I am exhausted... Girl, I'm so tired lol. But for a moment I dared to dream of what it will be like when the kids are older. What will they look like? How will their personalities change? What will be in fashion? Watching our kids grow is one of the best and hardest things about being a parent. Everyday I am blown away by how much they learn in such a short period of time. Every day they are one step closer to being more independent. Don't let time slip away. Let's talk due dates! Most of the time, our babies make the rules about when they enter into the world. So how do we decide on a date for the session? Firstly, I want to know when your due date is. I will know roughly when we are expecting bubs to arrive. Usually, I look 7-10 days in advance from there. We pencil in a tentative date before baby is born, and adjust as needed. Currently, I am only shooting on weekends, and 2x Saturday's a month I am working at the hospital. So it is best to book in as early as possible to ensure we have a ball park date. BUT DON'T STRESS! I will always fit in a newborn session if bubs really wants to keep us on our toes! Ultimately, capturing bubs between 5-14 days old is the sweet spot. Now, if you have had a caesarean, a traumatic birth, bubs needs a little extra help, or the adjustment to motherhood has been challenging for whatever reason, that is totally fine. I GET IT! We can adjust our expectations, adjust our timeframes, and work with you and what you feel comfortable with.
