One of the things I really believe in is the power of community and education in small business ownership. And I was lucky enough to find @sabrinagebhardtphotography in 2020 and join her first mastermind. Last fall, I attended her Root to Rise retreat where I participated in portfolio reviews, photography shoots led by Sabrina and @npsphotography, set goals and made lifelong friends with other RTR-ers. The retreat was just one small portion, as we were led for months by Sabrina with weekly coaching Zooms, a business book club, and near-daily Voxer hours to discuss everything from pricing to marketing, to bringing more balance to life. Photographing this family, just weeks after they welcomed their second baby boy, was a joy. In home newborn sessions allow families to be where they are, and I mean that both literally and figuratively: At home, where you’re spending all your time during the newborn phase anyway. Yes, you may be wearing your best, your feet are bare. Your kitchen is steps away, and it’s filled with snacks (and coffee!) Changes of clothes are in the nursery, should there be a blowout. Your partner can take a break when I am photographing just baby. Heck, so can you, mama. Doesn’t this sound like a dream? Planning is a huge part of the branding session experience and one of the key things we discuss in advance of the session is a shot list. A working shot list encompasses all of the images you need from the session, whether it be a photo for your website’s homepage, an offer you’ll be promoting on Instagram or a headshot to accompany an article you’re writing for an industry publication. What’s great about a branding session is that we have the time together to capture all of the above. Selling homes in one of the craziest markets in history? If so, standing out is a must. A weekend filled with shoots, goal setting, private yoga, great food, and most of all, these women. What you don’t see in these photos are the families we photographed. I’ll share those later, but I needed to give a permanent place on my feed to these women who have left a permanent imprint on my life. They have taught me, inspired me, and supported me and, after the @sabrinagebhardtphotography Root to Rise retreat this past weekend, I can now call each of them friends. There many reasons why I hear fellow creatives and business owners say they shouldn’t invest in a branding session. Here are some of the most common: 1️⃣ Branding photos are expensive To that I say, yes they are, but isn’t getting a collection of images you can use for months to share content worth it? And did you know that your branding session is a tax write-off? 2️⃣ You need to cut costs I totally get that cutting costs is a necessary evil at times. But your branding photos are an investment you use again and again and again. Pay once, use photos for months. Oftentimes, it’s actually our subscriptions that are sneakily eating away at our funds and not our one time costs. 3️⃣ Nobody wants to see photos of you on their feed WRONG. Photos of you are EXACTLY what people want to see. In fact, showing your face builds trust and fosters connection. 🎵 Let’s talk about props, baby 🎵 For my family work, I’m decidedly anti-prop as my preference is to let my clients shine. But for branding, props are a huge part of telling your story. In each of the examples pictured, my clients utilize the objects day in and day out to do their jobs. It’s part of their day, and how their talents shine. So it makes sense to bring them along and incorporate them into your session. The photos also make for great personalized stock imagery for social media posts about your process and how you work, and to populate your website.
