Clouded Yellow The two long established and long accepted butterfly migrants into Britain each year are the Clouded Yellow, and the Painted Lady. Both of these two species arrive virtually every summer, although the numbers vary to a huge amount every year, the numbers can vary from a few hundred to several million depending on the weather conditions along with the breeding success of them in Europe. In theory they are easier to see near the south coast where they arrive, but I have seen Clouded Yellow in Britain several times, the first time was in Gloucestershire. This particular Clouded Yellow was seen in Dorset whilst out walking a coastal trail a few years ago. There are one of several migrant butterfly species that arrive in Britain each year. These arrive by a variety of methods, some are brought in as caterpillars and then reared and released, some hitch a ride on boats, in boxes of food, or in other arrivals into Britain, some may be blown across the channel by wind, and I am sure there are other ways that butterflies enter Britain.

Marbled White One of the most distinctive and therefore one of the easiest to identify of our British species is the Marbled White. It is also one of our bigger butterflies (the females wingspan can reach over 58mm, which also adds to the ease of seeing them from a distance). The Marbled White can be found across quite varied habitat which ranges from meadowland, roadside verges, coasts, gardens etc. especially where the ground is chalk or Limestone. Their range is across most of Southern England, but is increasing northwards. The males are slighter smaller than the females and are more black in colour. This lovely female was photographed last week in Northamptonshire.

Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary There are eight Fritillary species in Britain, some of which are reasonably common and therefore easy to see through to other fritillary species which are amongst the rarest of our British butterflies. They are all strong fliers and often they can be quite elusive as they sometimes seem to fly non stop during which time they and can travel relatively long distances without stopping for a break which would give both viewing and potential photographic opportunities. They can often be tricky to identify with many of the fritillary species found in the same habitat at the same time of the year. Often they look very similar and sometimes it is a case of checking individual spots and trying to then establish which species. This particular one is the Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary which is found across most of Western England, Wales, and Scotland, it is one of the earliest of our Fritillary species to emerge and arguably one of the most common and easy to see. It is relatively small for a fritillary with the males being between 35 - 40mm wingspan, it can often be found roosting in the grass during the evening as was the case with this image.

Pyramidal Orchid When I am out with my camera watching wildlife and looking for images, I try and look for a wide variety of subjects and image types which range from close up of individual flowers through to wide angle shots of the landscape. In this particular image, which was photographed about a week ago, I liked the differing colours of the flower head as they were emerging and therefore I decided to concentrate on a close up image when this lovely Marbled White butterfly decided to land on the orchid, it stayed for a couple of minutes and I felt it enhanced my shot.

Hybrid Orchid As well as the 50+ species of orchids we have in Britain, there are many examples of hybrids that occur in the wild naturally between more than one species. Indeed, a quick look at one of the well known reference books shows there has been over 50 different combinations of hybrids recorded in Britain. Obviously some of these are quite rare and have only been scientifically confirmed and recorded a small number of occasions, whilst some others such and Monkey orchids or Lady orchids are regularly seen in a hybrid form with other species. Without a doubt, it can often be quite tricky to identify many of our "regular" British orchid species, but, when you come across hybrid species this can definitely make identification even harder. My understanding is that this particular example that I have posted for my 20th consecutive orchid post here on Instagram and also on my Facebook feed, is a Northern Marsh Orchid which is hybrid with a Common Spotted Orchid. It was photographed a couple of years ago in Northern England, the butterfly that chose to sit on top whilst I pointed my camera at the orchid was a Common Blue.
