PDK gear comparisons. We have both the 991 911 Turbo and 991/boxster non turbo on the rebuild stands at the same. Just in case you were wondering why the 991 turbo gearbox can withstand 1000ft tq with just a clutch upgrade and non turbo cannot... take a peek at the picture comparisons. Not only is the turbo 5th gear wider at 21mm vs non turbo 19mm, it has fewer teeth which means they are slightly thicker as well.👇💪
Porsche PDK stuff....we have now discovered, and repaired every sensor and element in the PDK. This is the 2nd unit we have had where we had 2 failures....one was the pressure sensor (and note how the new Porsche pressure sensor is different and a revision from the original sensor...someone knows something on this. Second though, and this is the second car where we have found the main DCT clutch pack to have failed. See all the grease...it's not the clutches, its the fluid escaping. The DCT clutch pack / unit has to be replaced. Relief - from hours of deep anxiety. Another PDK transmission resurrection. Customer had lost all hope...loved his car, but transmission would not work. According to other shops and the dealer, no hope, a new transmission was the only solution. Ahhhh... but there is a way. Diagnosis showed it to be the gear position sensor, or distance sensor. The older Boxster and Caymans take a slightly different tool to dis-assemble, but the internals and the sensors are the same. Remove case, remove sensor, wire into the transmission harness the new sensor, assemble, test, train the PDK w the PIWIS system, and voila', customer now has a fully working transmission. Attention - First of several major breakthroughs for repairs on PDK transmissions. In the past, if an issue arose w a Porsche PDK transmission, the answer from Porsche was, "get a new transmission". In many cases, that option costs over $25k...not an attractive option at all. In the last couple of years, there have been several shops across the globe that wanted to break into the PDK, and find other, more attractive solutions. BRracing joined this movement and started down this path almost a year ago. Our first venture was a Porsche 997.2 Carrera S PDK that would not shift. Core issue... transmission gear position sensor. There are now two sources for this position sensor (not available from Porsche, no parts are available from Porsche)....and once you have the tools (not generally available either, you have to develop and make all the tools yourself)...then you can break open the case, gain access to the internals, and start your surgery. For our 997 911 Carrera S customer, this was a very happy ending. His car had been sitting for a long time, as he could not afford the new transmission option, and had parked his car. Meet Frank and his 2009 Cayman. Frank tracks his Porsche Cayman regularly as it is fitted with a set of bucket sets, Schroth 5 point straps, wrapped with a set of Hankook slicks and a set of front lower GT3 control arms finish it off. During one track event his Cayman experienced a transmission failure, with lights all over the instrument cluster. The Cayman was in limp mode and unable to move on its own power. Frank was left with a DNF and had to tow his Cayman to the closest Porsche Dealership. The news from the Porsche dealership was staggering. The cost to repair was $28,700, which entailed a complete new transmission. Now this would be fine if the car had a few miles on it, over 150K but with a low 40,000 mile digit on the odometer this seems unacceptable. Frank looked around to see what options he had. I mean the car is barely worth much more than $30,000. With thoughts of swapping in a used gearbox, parting out the car or even selling as is, there was no easy option. This is where SDM stepped in. Frank got a hold of SDM and after a few back and forth emails, arrangements were made to have his car shipped to SDM for PDK repair. Upon delivery of the Frank's Cayman, SDM quickly diagnosed the failure of the PDK. SDM was able to rebuild and fix the PDK for less than one third the cost of a new PDK gearbox. But that's not the most important detail. First generation PDK transmissions DO NOT come with a gear oil cooler. The sensor that had failed was due to excessive heat in the gear oil cavity. If a new PDK gearbox was installed at the dealership if would too live a short life without a gear oil cooler. Not only did SDM rebuild the PDK to new specs we were able to install a gear oil cooler to insure this failure wouldn't happen again.
