𝘗𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 is a pretty damselfly species that was first recorded in Singapore. It is sometimes called the blue-spotted flatwing; this common name makes reference to the odd outspread position of the two pairs of wings while the damselfly is at rest, since damselflies typically fold their wings backwards while perched. | Image 1 shows a male and female forming what is known as a mating wheel. | Images 2 and 3show how the female oviposits or lays its eggs. It cuts open a slit in a stem of a plant and inserts eggs. Podolestes orientalis, the Blue-spotted Flatwing! 🧐: The Blue-spotted Flatwing is the only species of the family Megapodagrionidae found in Singapore so far. This robust-looking damselfly can sometimes be confused for a dragonfly due to its rather large size for a local damselfly and that it spreads its wings at rest, giving its family the common name of 'Flatwings'. Damselflies are generally known to rest with their wings up above the abdomen when resting, which makes this species and other fellow wing-spreaders interesting! The first two photos are shown here are of a male and the last three photos are of a female, which one can tell by looking at the tail appendages and larger size of the female. This damselfly is uncommon in Singapore, being found in forested water-bodies such as calm streams and ponds! 👀: this species has been a target for me since i started getting into Odonates seriously and i was not prepared for how big a female was! like sure a Flashwing is bigger than it but after seeing how small the Wisps are, this fella was like a giant!! so happy to have gotten these shots of them with the female being the first ever one i've found and shot, i remember gasping so loud upon seeing it for the first time 😭😭😭😭
