“The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”” Genesis 25:23 NIV This is the outworking of the fateful apple bite. Separation. Separation from God, from the garden of Eden, but also from each other. This promise (curse?!) highlights again the brokeness, the pain, the helplessness of the human condition. We are unable to know complete unity until we are no longer separated from God. And when we are united with Him, we can be united with each other - despite disagreement. There is also a hint here however of the upside-down nature of the kingdom of God. The older shall serve the younger. Unheard of. So the fact God singles out the younger, the less important (culturally / historically) and says "you are significant, you will be raised up" gives us a glimpse into his heart for the weak, downtrodden and forgotten. Praise God that we don't have to live in the separation of the Old Testament but have the hope and unity offered by Jesus in the New. Praise God that despite differences cultural, socially, politically we are no longer separated but united in Christ.
