One of my instructors was telling me about a chap on the wireless saying the quality of flight training within the industry is going downhill. It’s something I’m asked often; ie what the standards are like for students coming out of the big flight schools. I don’t altogether agree it’s going downhill. As a broad generalisation, I think the non-technical skills and human factors are a lot better than years ago. Takeoff Safety Brief’s and flight check systems are used more thoroughly, and the concepts behind them are well understood. The bit that has probably declined over the years from what I see are the hands and feet. I think it comes from having so many telly’s in the cockpit that students don’t watch what the nose is doing relative to the horizon, but I fix that with bits of paper, biscuit packets, post-it notes, tree branches etc covering the screens. So, I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with current flight training programs, it just needs some reminders to look out the front more often and feel what your butt is doing to keep the ball in the centre. Do that and before long you’ll have a calibrated bum like me, which some may say is my very being.

Float training in the float caravan today (it would be marginally more difficult to do so in the non-float caravan). You can see the prop is in fine whilst the engine is shutdown, rather than feather like usual. That’s because the machine has pitch locks installed, which locks it in fine pitch on shutdown to enable instant thrust after engine start for manoeuvring on the water rather than sitting at the mercy of the breeze whilst the prop comes out of feather.

Very fortunate to pick up the Kodiak 100 today and ferry it home to train it’s new owner’s pilots on it. 322 hours total time on the airframe, it even still has new-car-smell! Hunter Aerospace is in full swing for 2024 and this week we’re completing an annual inspection on @blueskyaustralia Cessna Caravan. Close up look is one of fuel nozzles removed for cleaning and flow check. The fuel manifold adapter assembly incorporates a simplex, single orifice fuel nozzle with a swirl-type tip and a sheath. The swirl-type tips provide a fine atomized fuel spray in the annular combustion chamber liner.
