Last month, Cecilia, our Vice Principal, and Mackenzie, a mechanical team member, were chosen to attend the @ausgp FIA Girls on Track Career Development and Mentoring Program, held during the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. They were among 20 participants selected for this opportunity and we would like to show our appreciation by extending a big thank you to @motorsport.australia and @fia.official, for making it possible! ๐งก๐ During the event, the girls had the chance to listen to Girls on Track Ambassador @krystinaemmanouilides alongside other esteemed guest speakers like @ms.lune, @jessdane14, @emmanotarfrancesco, @katepeckme, and many more! They had the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals, and were able to gain real-life experience by touring the @stakef1team Kick Sauber F1 teamโs garage, walking around the pit lane and paddock, and meeting @valtteribottas and @zhouguanyu24! ๐คฉ The FIA Girls on Track program has always aimed to inspire and celebrate women in all aspects of motorsports. The most prestigious event, the Aus GP, is the culmination of their events year-round, with their other events including the Girls on Track - Inspire, & the Girls on Track - Pathways events. Letโs take a look back at QMX-III, our legendary โ06-โ07 FSAE competitor! ๐๏ธ QMX-III was the first car to place in the top 10 overall at competition for QUT Motorsport ๐ Featuring newly designed bodywork, a slightly revised chassis, and a lighter package overall, QMX-III set new standards for performance, catalysing the teamโs journey into a new era of success. Some of its other specs included double A-Arm wishbones with pull rod suspension, chain and sprocket drive to spool drivetrain, and 13โ Hosier tyres. Our alumni have shared some testing moments they had with QMX-III, including a rushed trip for spare suspension arms and some trailer fails involving a flat tyre on the way back from Willowbank and a broken leaf spring on the way back from the annual competition. Among these tales, the most impressive was an overnight engine swap during the 2007 competition, just before the endurance event the following day! We have limited slots for both training and social to ensure players have enough games within the 3hr social sessions and 1hr training sessions. Players are required to sign up through the link in our instagram bio๐1 person per sign up. 2.โ โ Q. Do we have to be professional to play the social session? A. Definitely a big NO. Our sessions welcome all level players from beginners to professional! 3.โ โ Q. Is there a training discount available? A. The training 5pass is cheaper than 1 time session. Feel free to try for one session first and see if you like it! 4.โ โ Q. Is it going to be one-on-one while training? A. Unfortunately, we have limited coaches, so we do not offer one-on-one training, the maximum students for 1 coach is 4 students. Is it compulsory to come for all sessions if we bought the membership? A. Our alumni have also shared an amusing memory that happened after QMX-II was taken to Archerfield Speedway for a display. โOn the way home, very late that night, a wheel came off the trailer and bounced down the hill past us while we were driving on the main road. Friday night marked a significant event on QUT Motorsportโs calendar, as we hosted our 2024 Industry Night, an evening in which we shared our passion for the project and displayed our gratitude towards our sponsors and industry partners. 2024 is the year of celebrations for QUT Motorsport, and to highlight our past vehicles, each month we will celebrate the success of these cars! To kick it off, we go back 20 years to our first-ever vehicle, QMX-I. QMX-I featured a Yamaha R6 engine from a motorbike, which would be run in QUTโs vehicles for many years after QMX-1, a chromoly steel tube space frame, and 13โ Goodyear tyres. The vehicle donned the famous number 46, inspired by Valentino Rossi in the official font. The team headed to competition with high hopes, and given that this was the first QUT Motorsport vehicle to compete, the respectable midfield finishing position of 17th overall kept the team motivated to continue their progress into 2005 and beyond! These days, unlike some of our other chassis, QMX-I can be found in the garden of an alumniโs house where it is being used as a garden bed! As the year comes to a close, we could not be happier with how the 2023 FSAE-A Competition finished. With QEV-4 making it out on track and completing 15 laps of endurance, and QEV-3D was cleared to be pushed around the autonomous demonstration track to collect data to further improve our systems, there was no better way to end the year off. The team never gave up throughout the weekend, pushing until the last minute to get the maximum performance out of both cars. It has been a long time coming for QUT Motorsport, with it being 11 years since we have competed dynamically at competition, and first time ever in the EV category. Obviously, this wouldnโt be possible without the support of QUT, sponsors, faculty advisors David, Geoff and Mark, University tech staff, families and alumni. 11 years in the making. Yesterday QUT Motorsport scored its first dynamics points in over a decade. The day started with the team flying through the remaining of our EV scrutineering tests - EV2, rain test and brake test. We then swiftly headed to the skidpad where our drivers set times of 5.48 and 5.9. After a couple practice runs, our acceleration driver then headed to track recording a 6.049. While our driverless team worked endlessly and were able to pass EV2. At midday statics results were released, with us placing 9th in EV Engineering Design and 14th in EV Business Presentation. Congratulations to our statics team who worked extremely hard in preparation. A tale of two halves yesterday for the team. With both statics events and scrutineering requiring the vehicles, it was a well organised juggle to make sure we had the cars in the right spots. Our statics teams have smashed it out the park, as we rolled through cost event, design judging, business presentation and autonomous design lite - all going extremely well. We are looking forward to seeing our results today. Both QEV-3D and QEV-4 have had some issues, that kept us out of progressing further with scrutineering yesterday. But the team is confident that we have fixed these issues and should be passing the remaining scrutes this morning. Yesterday the team arrived bright and early to Calder Park Raceway, with the first day of FSAE-A competition seeing both our EV and AV vehicles flying through their scrutineering. With both cars passing their EV1, accumulator and mech inspections alongside tilt test and weighing. Ciao Italia! ๐ฎ๐น๐ Earlier this year, we were invited to write an article about our team and how we overcame the technical challenge of creating a custom gearbox through our collaboration with KISSsoft. This partnership allowed us to create custom gear tooth profiles, optimising contact ratios and reducing backlash, streamlining our workflow and efficiency. Recently, the Italian technical magazine InMotion published our article in their September 2023 issue. This achievement fills our team with immense pride, and weโre extremely grateful to see our project being highlighted globally! Several members of the QUT Motorsport team had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Girls on Track events hosted over two-days at Triple Eight Race Engineering and Queensland Raceway. Over the course of those few days, our team had the privilege of visiting Triple Eight Race Engineering and getting an exclusive behind-the-scenes garage tour. At these events, our members had the chance to hear the inspiring stories of women who are currently making waves in the industry. In addition to these experiences, QUT Motorsport members Aqua, Cecilia, Emily, and Mackenzie spent time working with school-aged students in the Girls on Track Inspire program. This program aims to inspire an enthusiasm for STEM and motorsport among the upcoming generation, with the ultimate goal of boosting female participation in these fields. A big thank-you to Motorsport Australia and Girls on Track for allowing us to be a part of the event and to Priyanka Chanda for all her dedicated efforts to get us involved. Programs like these are instrumental in promoting inclusion and diversity within the motorsport industry as well as inspiring the next generation to become involved.
