Practicing some paint effects this morning. So the construction begins... The little narrow hallway will get decorated with raised wood paneling that will be painted warm off-white. The staircase, the door, and the floor will remain oak. Of course, it is not original Victorian woodwork painted over! This is mdf paneling added during the rennovation to support old walls. Due to the fact that it is my first major scratch build I am just not confident enough working with wood and veneers. That is why I decided to build panelling that will be painted on the first floor, as the paint will conceal any construction flaws. Moreover, English arts and crafts homes' signature look is painted paneling. My more ambitious plan includes building an "oak room" on the second level after I gain some experience on the first. I cannot decide which style to choose for the hallway arch though. Which one looks better: the one that mimicks the walls, or the skinny "romanesque" style, with one long column-like groove? I might lower the mock arch you see in the picture after I see what it looks like with raised panels (they are high, reaching slightly above the door trim).

Today was one of those days I had to recover my craft room which bore great calamities of the last productive week. I made no progress on the dollhouse, but decided to share my thoughts on lattice… Not salad lettuce, but the kind of porch skirting often found on Victorian porches that can be seen on Honeyberry House in great abundance. In fact, it goes all the way around its foundation (except the back part). There are many other laser cut kits I’ve seen with similar / same feature. Indeed, it looks adorable on a dollhouse. Will it make the dollhouse look realistic is another question. In reality no lacy porch skirting would be capable of holding the heavy weight of the house structure, its architectural details, furniture, inhabitants and their stuff. Houses in real life rest on solid foundations made of brick, stone and mortar.. or other heavy-duty stuff. So I decided to cover parts of the foundation with stone (air-dry clay + egg containers) and leave the fun lattice under the weightless porch/terrace. I believe this is what will make Honeyberry House look more realistic.

Miniature goes hand in hand with the love for small detail and precision. However, a teeny-tiny flaw sometimes can ruin an overall look, like in case when a gaping cut in the clapboard around the window/door trim has a devastating impact on the exterior. If you think about gluing your trim on top of your clapboard hiding the rough cuts behind, that is one solution. Will it look real? Yes and no! There are houses, especially in the south, where the trim sits on top of the siding. It is a less desirable look in terms of wear though, frowned upon by a lot of carpenters. In a real house protruding trim would be more affected by the weather and rot. Besides, on a dollhouse it might look wrong : I have almost 3 mm wide trim, which would make it around 7 cm thick in its life-size version (and that would simply not happen in reality)! So if your house is not just a dollhouse, but a dollhouse that is supposed to look like a real one, you probably are looking for a solution on how to have your trim butted against clapboard tightly. I would like to share with you a technique that works great and even will allow you to take the window out in order to paint your siding: Tools (Exacto knife, metal ruler, your preferred choice of glue for the siding, clamps with a soft grip, repositionable adhesive). Draw a template of your wall on paper (you won’t need it for this job, but it is a good idea to always do so). Cut out a piece of clapboard for your wall. Glue your clapboard, avoiding putting the glue around the edge of the window (approx. width of the trim). This will enable you to take out the unwanted piece later. I use Elmer’s glue (PVA) or yellow wood glue, which are similar with one exception: the last will dry yellow and works slightly faster. Clamp it. After the glue is dry, flip your piece and cut out the window opening using the interior side as a guide (you will need this to position your window frame). Spray some repositionable adhesive into a can (don’t apply it directly, it is messy). (If you have a repositionable adhesive stick, good for you!) Brush it on the inner side of the window trim.⬇️(continued below)

🏡 Dollhouse update Isolating, opening a new school and starting the school year all put a pause on the project (which has now evolved from holiday project into maintain-sanity-through-2021-project). The bottom level flooring is finally glued down, gaps filled and varnished ♡. I am so happy with the outcome. Thrilled I went with the popsicle sticks for the real wood look. Hindsight lesson #04: Have turpentine in the house before you get your hands full of varnish. #dollhouse #arthurdollhouse #realisticdollhouse #dollhouseflooring #woodenfloor #craftersofinstagram #keepingsane

🏠 Dollhouse update -- A sneak peek at my plans for the bottom level flooring. I figured the most realistic way to get a wooden-floor-boards-look was to actually lay wooden floor boards 😅. Miniature popsicle sticks with the ends cut off are doing the trick and I'm loving the result. Filling in the edges and vanishing still to go. Hindsight lesson #03 - you can hold the hacksaw from the top and put pressure with your whole hand rather than holding it on the handle like a knife and making your thumb totally numb from the solo job of pressuring through the wood 🙄 #realisticdollhouse #holidayproject #dollhouse #flooring #craftersofinstagram
