You can never have too many choices. The scrap bins with the red, orange and grey prints are empty. I cut thimbles from every oddly shaped piece of fabric. I used quite a few of my precut 2 1/2" strips. Then I pulled out my stash of fabrics in orange and grey ... just in case. I need about 1700 thimbles, maybe even 1800. It depends on the final size of the quilt.

Why do I prewash all my fabric? I used no pink fabric in this quilt, those are tans that turned pink in the first wash. I had prewashed everything. And it still bled. So it's getting a warm bath with Dawn dish soap, and I'm fairly sure it will be OK. But..... It wasn't a fun day in my laundry room when I pulled it out of the washer. I finished my #bearyscrappyquilt last week! It looks like it belongs in a cabin in the woods, so I backed it with cozy flannel, of course. This was a fun one to put together! After some try and error I worked out how to save time and thread: - First I cut hundreds of thimbles and made an incredible mess of my sewing room. 😂 - Then I used the floor in my sewing room as design wall. There is enough floor space for about a dozen rows. As I didn't have a plan for the quilt to start with, I guessed that 42 thimbles per row should work out well. Ok, when in doubt think big.😉 - Do I really have time for making another bed-sized quilt ? No, not really. Therefore I tried to save time by sewing the thimbles together without marking them and without using pins. Big surprise it works! At least for me. As a very seasoned quilt maker I can eyeball a 1/4" seam allowance almost in my sleep. Ok, that's a bit exaggerated, but with nestling the seam allowances I get the wanted result. - At the beginning I only worked with two rows at a time because I was afraid of making mistakes. I want to be consistent in the placement of the darker and lighter thimbles. Later I tried working with four rows, but switched back to two rows almost immediately. Much more trouble and no time gained.

This beauty is being offered at $535.00 The dimensions on the antique quilt are 80 x 81 so it has lots of ways to use it since it’s virtually square . I have given it a bath actually, it was its first wash . There are a couple small spots on the top , some on the back that are not visible on the front. The hand quilting is really fine and tiny stitches. Be sure and look at all the images and close-ups. . The color is great solid red.There’s no bleeding of color.. . Spotlight on Ruby’s Diner 16”x16” There’s a place in the Las Vegas airport called Ruby’s Diner. It has a gorgeous red tiled wall, which I was obsessed with when I first saw it several years ago. It has stirred around in the back of my brain all of this time, then suddenly came to life at a recent retreat. The red tile was cut freehand from 2 1/2” strips, and the grout was cut using a ruler at 3/4”. I doubt a photo will ever really capture the depth of the tile versus the grout.
