For 31 years, @larrydervin championed the minority and marginalized populations on the #MaryvilleCollege campus, but as Belinda Kenny pointed out today, "If a student had a problem, they could come to Larry. It didn't matter who you were — red, yellow, black, white — if you had a problem and Larry could help, he would get to work." For 18 years, through a variety of positions that have culminated in her service as assistant dean of students, @kmg04 has made student advocacy her passion. Whether advising @maryvillesga or sitting down one-on-one to provide both compassion and accountability, few other, if any, faculty and staff members could sit at commencement and name every single student walking across the stage to claim a diploma. Kristin could, because at one time or another, she's touched them all. Finally, @revannedmckee has been a spiritual shepherd of the MC flock for 21 years, providing encouragement, counsel, wisdom and virtue. More importantly, she's managed to find the words when none of us could to offer comfort during dark times, and to always find the North Star by which we could steer our ships. This afternoon, we gathered in the @claytoncenterforthearts to salute them ... to celebrate them ... and to wish them well. Retirement receptions are always bittersweet. They’re great excuses to come together and fellowship and enjoy snacks, but they’re also reflections on the legacies those retiring will leave behind. Fortunately for us, Dr. Lori Schmied, professor of psychology, is only stepping out of the classroom. She’ll no longer be a part of the faculty, but she will be active with @mcscotsabroad and the Center for Global Engagement, because as soon as Commencement wraps May 7, she’ll be on a plane with students, headed to Switzerland with fellow psych professor Dr. @ariane.schratter for a 10-day Advanced Study of International Child Welfare 10-day course. It’s the eighth such international travel study she’s led, and given her love of it, it won’t be the last. But her absence will be keenly felt in the Division of Behavioral Sciences, where she established Neuroscience as an independent discipline here at MC. A lot of Scots are doing a lot of great things thanks to Dr. Schmied, and we’ll love to see what she does, but we’ll certainly miss the impact she has in academia.
