There's a million shades of white in the Wedding Outfit world - even across different brands, "ivory" might look different. I'm not saying you have to get rid of it entirely (though that is a solution), but the wind can make your veil fly all over the place which can be distracting during your ceremony and block your face in your photos! If you're dedicated to keeping your veil, consider getting veil weights on etsy or amazon. They're attached to the bottom edge of your veil which keeps it from flying up in the air. What’s your favorite current pop song? A bride just called to ask if we’re available for her wedding date. When I said yes, she asked “Can you play current pop songs”?. I answered “Yes” to this, too, and I added that #theMagnoliaJazzBand isn’t your basic rock and roll band, so we seldom play our medley of “Metallica’s All-Time Hits”. But we often arrange simple little versions of recent popular songs like “Happy”, “Come and Get Your Love”, “Yellow”, or “A Thousand Years”. Always a treat to play something new. These days, #theMagnoliaJazzBand entertains small groups at outdoor weddings and parties. I love to customize music for these smaller, more intimate little celebrations. Like this one: A few years ago we entertained in this little dinner party at the #LomaPrietaWinery, high in the Santa Cruz mountains. Thrilling drive getting there, and what a spectacular view! This party was for an exclusive group of about 25 Peace Corp volunteers, traveling here from around the country to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their service. Considering their (ahem) vintage, we prepared a program of several dozen hits of the 1960s — like “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “California Dreaming”, “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “The Dock of the Bay”, “Happy Together”, and “Oh Pretty Woman” — in addition to our usual collection of popular standards. What a wonderful evening — entertaining an intimate group of long-time friends. We should do this more often! Wouldn’t you? Our current warming weather is perfect for lovely weddings and garden parties. Once the outdoor season ends, I expect we’ll move indoors for more opportunities like this. Thanks for reading. S + W first contacted me for their wedding day after Brentwood Rise shared a blog post I had written for another one of my couples. They’ve since come full circle, and now have their own wedding day blog 🥹 It only feels right to share a little excerpt: S + W’s captivating love story began during their high school years. Fate brought them together in their sophomore year. It wasn’t until they later found themselves seated next to each other in a class that a spark ignited. Their friendship blossomed throughout their junior year, eventually leading to a deep connection that grew into a beautiful romance. On a memorable Valentine’s Day, W orchestrated a dreamy proposal at Disneyland. Being their very first trip together, it held a special place in their hearts. I was very surprised by the amount of ignorance we encountered planning our own wedding. I know the feeling of your stomach dropping when someone chooses to put their own comfort over respecting your identity. I understand what it means to pass as straight/cis, and how infuriating that can be when people assume. I also know what it's like to be unconditionally accepted and celebrated for who I am. I know what it's like to not have to do the extra emotional labor just to exist when I'm around other queer people. There's a safety that can only come when you're surrounded by other LGBTQ+ people, and that's why I am so passionate about queer wedding couples hiring queer vendors (like me!) whenever possible. No misgendering, no stereotypes, no assumptions.
