Engagement Session but make it yours. 🌮 Emily and Nick met at a college party and later that night had their "first date" at Taco Bell, this exact Taco Bell. During college it kind of became their place. They would hit it up after late night studying or after a night out, so we knew we had to incorporate it into their session. I love it when my couples make their engagement session their own! And I am even more excited because these two say I do in about 3 months!!
FIRST THING TO DO AFTER GETTING ENGAGED: 1. Start a checklist of things to do Make a list of things to do for your big day with the things that are most important for you at the top of your list. It is super important to prioritize what is most important to you. 2. Take time to enjoy being engaged Try not to let the stress of planning your big day take away from the fun and excitement of being engaged. Really focus on spending time with your partner during this fun time. 3. Divide tasks and get them done: Being able to divide tasks with someone can really keep you grounded. Whether this person is your partner, best friend, or a wedding planner it is nice to have someone to share tasks with to help take the load off.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR TIMELINE GOING SMOOTHLY ONCE DINNER STARTS: A good way to keep on schedule during the dinner part of the wedding is to have the photographers and videographer eat at the same time as the bride and groom. While many people would think to have them eat last it actually really helps the timeline for them to eat at the same time as the bride and groom so that as soon is everyone is done eating we can all go take bridal photos while the guests finish dinner.
MY BIGGEST TIP FOR GREAT RECEPTION PHOTOS: Okay this is a big one on how to get the best dancing reception photos! Strobe lights make it very challenging for photographers. With the strobe lights they typically flash between different colors and it can pretty difficult to change the hues of the photo. Instead, use a solid white light at the beginning of your reception for photos and when the photographer is done then turn on the strobe.
WHY I INCLUDE AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION IN ALL MY WEDDING PACKAGES: I think it is super important to get to know my couples before their big day. This helps them be more comfortable in front of the camera and more comfortable with me. We get to talk about some details of your wedding and of course we get to capture amazing photos for your save the dates!

WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR BRIDAL PORTRAITS? The best time for bridal portraits is in the evening around golden hour. The sun is much softer and the light is more even. I typically will grab my couples right after they have eaten dinner so their guests can continue setting and socializing while they are off taking photos.
While the era of masked weddings start to come to an end I want to thank all the couples who did get married during this time. A lot of photographers struggled during this time and it was such a good feeling to be able to still work!
ONE OF MY FAVORITE PHOTOS ON A WEDDING DAY! One of my favorite moments to capture during every wedding is just a candid photo of the couple walking. They aren’t staged and most of the time the couple does not even know I’m taking it. I just love this sweet moment of bliss that they share.
WEDDING DRESS TREND I AM OBSESSED WITH: Okay here it is! In this first photo you can see this stunning bride in her dress right?! Plot twist though, it is actually a skirt over a small reception dress!!! So the top is part of a separate dress and all she had to do was take off the skirt and she was ready to hit the dance floor! How cool is that!
Santa Barbara has so many beautiful locations for engagement sessions and proposals and we’ve been lucky enough to photograph some amazing clients at quite a few of them, but after photographing this proposal at Ganna Walska Lotusland, we need to update our favorites list.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Lotusland is so much more expansive than we originally thought it would be and there are so many unique gardens to explore and experience. If you’re looking for an exotic location for photos, we’d absolutely recommend Lotusland in Montecito!
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK MY PHOTOGRAPHER: The top two vendors you should look into after getting engaged are your venue and your photographer. While a vendor like the florist can do a couple weddings a day, the venue and photographer can only work one. Especially since covid has pushed back a lot of weddings to this year it is very important to book as early as possible. I have already started booking into 2022!
Tropical wedding without the flight cost: Santa Barbara has that tropical feel where the weather is always perfect and the water is always warm. (And in downtown there is even a shave ice shop!) Beach and mountains: If you have ever been to Santa Barbara you know that it has the best of both worlds, beaches and mountains! Whether you are going up into the mountains for a great view of the town and beach or wanting a beautiful mountain background it has it all! Amazing venues and gorgeous elopement spots: SB has some stunning wedding venues with gorgeous views, but of course there is also stunning beaches around that make for the perfect place to elope. It also has the most stunning courthouse for elopements I have ever seen! Not as busy as LA beaches: While Santa Barbara is about an hour from LA it is much more quiet and peaceful (don’t get me wrong, downtown can be a fun and wild time) but the beaches are less crowded and the parking is a lot easier. Super fun downtown: Not only is it a great place to have your wedding but there are such fun things you can do before and after. Downtown is a great place to walk around, shop, get drinks, and has amazing food!
WHAT YOU SHOULD WEAR TO YOUR MATERNITY SESSION: A solid color: Solid colors do not hide your tummy and will make your baby stand out more. Something a little tighter: Wearing something tighter will show your baby belly even better and looks great in your photos!

As we hid behind bushes and pretended to be on the phone with cameras out of sight we waited for a sweet couple to approach the spot we’d designated beforehand. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Arm and arm they walked towards us, unbeknown to one of them, that they were the reason we were there. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You see, Matthew reached out to us over a month in advance because he wanted everything to be special for his soon-to-be fiancé, Marissa. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He gave her a hug, and as we pulled up our cameras he dropped to his knee. Overjoyed and filled with happiness Marrisa said yes, and they were engaged!

About 10 minutes before this photo was taken, I was hiding behind a eucalyptus tree hoping @erika_bellitt didn't spot me and @iheartmygroom @iheartmygroomfilms looking like mega creepers... I LOOOOOOVE photographing surprise proposals, but this was the first time it was for someone I know personally, so it was MUCH harder to hide. When I've never met the couple before I'm asked to capture a proposal on camera, it's easy to be a random stranger nearby, pretending to photograph birds or the sunset over the ocean, one eye trained on them from a distance so I can pounce at just the right moment. But with Erika, we had to stay hidden so she wouldn’t spot us and ask why we happened to be hanging out near their favorite picnic spot! So we had to lurk in the foliage, craning our necks to see when Mitch was going to get down on one knee. Totally worth it -- the joy on Erika's face says it all!
I am SO damn excited for my beautiful friend @erika_bellitt and her FIANCÉ!! Hiding behind a tree with @iheartmygroomfilms + @iheartmygroom full of giddy, anxious excitement (and then getting to see the pure joy + surprise on Erika’s face) was the highlight of my weekend. 😂😍 Congratulations, Erika + Mitchell!!
