What I knew about Erin Kempe and Paolo Barbieri, the dynamic winemaking duo in Santa Barbara County before I met with them was this: originally from Parma, Italy, Paolo left Italy at the age of 22 and pursued a career in the restaurant industry in England. He became a Sommelier and spent more than 30 years managing world class, wine lists, working for prestigious restaurants in Las Vegas at places like the Bellagio, Wynn, and the Cosmopolitan. While working with wines from several Santa Barbara County producers, Paolo was impressed with the quality of the regions vineyards. In 2003, he became a gargariste, making small, experimental lots of wine from Santa Barbara grapes. His objective has been to create Rhône varietals from the regions top Vineyards using minimalistic wine making techniques without heavy oak influence. Erin Kempe’s culinary career started in her home state of Texas. A moved to Las Vegas brought her to work with culinary masters and James Beard winners like Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys, Shawn McClain of Sage, and others. After meeting Paolo she became passionate to help with winemaking. With Paolo, she created a new line label under her name, Kempe, which focuses on Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, petite, Sirah , and Bordeaux blends. What I know now, after meeting them and tasting their wines is they are dynamite wine makers. With a real knack for allowing the grapes to express in the best possible way. A few other things I found out, Paolo is from Rome. And he speaks with a Roman accent. I also found that he uses stem contact when pressing the grapes and he doesn’t use new oak. All the wines I tried were 2020 vintage, except for the Vermentino which was 2022 and a GSM blend which was 2018. The 2020 Coleso Canyon Syrah, get some! Both labels were delightful, food-friendly wines with good structure, ripe fruit, well balanced, that you could also open and drink today. Check out their Instagram to learn more about them.
