This morning’s workshop at the Stirljng Women’s Shed was “Make your own Scrapers for Bowls and Spoons”. A metal working exercise today. Recycling old saw blades into scrapers. I also started making a couple of blades for two restored No.80 Cabinet Scrapers. Metal scrapers pre-date sandpaper. Get the right radius curve and they can be wonderful for cleaning out spoon bowls and bigger bowls after the gouge work. Of course, once the shape is formed and filed, the burr needs to be rolled. Then they cut like fine planes. Cabinet Scrapers are great for finishing cranky wood too, and great for removing glue after you have glued up a panel or table top. Nice. The best of both worlds is to make scrapers with curved ends of different radii, joined by straight sides. Then you get the long sides for use as cabinet scrapers and the two round ends for spoons etc. So many possibilities! Of course, recycling old saws into scrapers is a good use for them. However if the saw is good enough to sharpen, then let’s do that and put it back into service. That’s our next workshop. Saw Sharpening. Don’t miss that one! www.trybooking.com/eventlist/woodwomen #stirlingwomensshed #thejoyofwood #cabinetscraper #spoonscraper #bowlscraper #sawrecycling #makeyourowntools

Scrapers. Curved ones are great for cleaning out (fine planing) of spoon bowls and small wooden bowls. Cabinet Scrapers have been used for centuries for finishing wooden surfaces - before sandpaper was invented. There is a workshop on Saturday morning 4 May, at the Stirling Women's Shed where we will custom make our own scrapers, by recycling old saw blades. We will make our own scrapers suitable for spoons, bowls, and for flat surfaces. Of course, you will also learn how to sharpen the scrapers, by rolling the essential burr along the edges. Fantastic! Don't miss this one. Experience a bit of metal working in aid of your wood working. Make your own tools!
