What is Sentebale’s Let Youth Lead (LYL) programme? Born from swift action and heartfelt discussions in 2016, LYL broadens horizons for youth by facilitating engagement with their peers, communities, policymakers and stakeholders through various consultative forums all with the goal to positively impact the policies and initiatives geared towards young people. Membership to the LYL advocacy programme is based on simple criteria - being a young person of age 19-29 in Botswana with a keen interest in youth matters, advocacy as well as the desire for personal growth and development. The main issues discussed are those that affect the youth such as their health, well-being, education, access to youth-friendly services etc. In the current group of about 50 LYL advocates, we have several who are living openly and positively with HIV. Sentebale intentionally allows the young people to lead this youth programme. We listen and support the bright ideas they suggest e.g., introducing the school outreach programme, attention to mental health particularly after the COVID-19 experience and arranging life skills training. One popular activity under the LYL programme is the Youth Summit. They participate as presenters and facilitators. Botswana's First Lady Mrs. Neo Masisi has noticed their capabilities and often engages them in her initiatives as a UNAIDS Champion focusing on the youth agenda. They are called upon to participate in key policy dialogues by The National AIDS and Health Promotion Agency (NAHPA), UNICEF and other stakeholders. Furthermore, our Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer Miss Olerato Keegope who diligently coordinates the LYL programme, together with some advocates, has been nominated to participate in key national and international forums such as; The National Children’s Council, UNICEF Youth and Children Advisory Panel, Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism, and PEPFAR's Have it All Ambassador Programme, to name a few. These youth advocates are incredible individuals who are making a difference for themselves and their peers, and we couldn’t be prouder. Last week I found myself in the most unexpected of rooms - at Prince Harry’s Sentebale charity event with my dear friend Dr. Sophie Chandauka, MBE, the new Chair of the Sentebale Board. I could go on about being excited to meet a Prince and the still very attractive Nacho Figueras. But, strangely that was not THE highlight (though it was A highlight 😉). It was incredibly inspiring to be surrounded by people who are driven by DOING MORE, adding VALUE to the world and DARING to do things differently. As 14 year old girls, Sophie and I would sit in empty classrooms in our school in Zimbabwe and just DREAM - of college in the U.S. and of all the possibilities. We would joke, then we would be serious. These were BOLD dreams. What a treat to watch her live out her version of BOLD. Not all our paths include having a Prince on speed dial. But, every single one of us can choose to stretch ourselves, add value to the world and live the most AUTHENTIC and expansive version of OURSELVES.
