Quarantine Watch: @gretelandhanselmovie (2020) [Sophia Lillis Double Feature] As you would have guessed, I am doing Sophia Lillis double feature starting with her first release of the year - Gretel & Hansel. Based on the folktale by the Brothers Grimm (but with a reversal in the title to stress on the more prominent character). The folktale was dark enough, but director Osgood 'Oz' Perkins (Anthony Perkins' Son) gives it a more grim feel with a goth horror aura to entire story. He even adds a backstory for the witch (which is quite important when you come to think of it). Well, it's for the better since now we know why the witch exists and what she is after. @sophialillis (IT) & Alice Krige (Carnival Row) are spectacular as Gretel & the Witch. Gretel has a major role in the movie as she plays the elder sibling here & there is also a sort of mystery attached to her. Lillis has grown from strength to strength with each performance (IT, Sharp Objects). She is a force to be reckoned with. Krige is terrifying as the witch who gives the siblings a home & work. Gretel & Hansel is very dark and thats a good thing; it makes the folktale all the more enjoyable. Hopefully it paves a path for similar adaptations of other Grimm Folktales.
