My initial plan was to target Smallmouth Bass and things were not working out. I switched back and forth from different baits. The final day of my mini fishing trip. It's been a pretty tough few days, mainly due to the thunderstorm colouring the rivers and a constant nagging wind. A long day out today. Out the door at 6am to photograph wildlife, then on to find more bluebells before they are done and finally hitting the river for a late breakfast. On the river it was a day of the olive upright. There was a steady trickle of them all day and the big brownies were out in force to intercept them, sat mainly in pool tails. I left it as late as I dare to call it a day yesterday with an evening birthday BBQ to attend. But then on the walk back to the car I found a couple of good trout, rising close together, tight to the far bank. I waded in without the usual heron-like stealth due to the time. Luckily it didn't spook them and I caught the one at the back, just over 2lb. No time for a photo - it went straight back and I dried the fly to cover the other fish. It too took the fly, a small Foam Dun, first cast. It was bigger, at 2½lb, but fought far harder than the size difference would suggest. It was big enough to warrant a photo despite now running very late. Then on releasing the fish, unbelievably, there was another trout in the same place, but very tight to the bank and there was no way I could not have a cast at it. My wading was more like someone starting a cross-channel swim than the careful approach it warranted, but the trout continued to rise and I got it on the same fly. I'll admit I got lucky with this one - it was hooked in the nostril - but it held firm and I landed the biggest of the three, pictured here quickly before hurrying back to the car with the rod collapsed, just in case there were others rising! #flyfishing #fishing #trout #browntrout #browntroutflyfishing #browntroutfishing #keepemwet #dryflyfishing #springtroutfishing

The morning started out slow as I seemed to help take every twig and small stick out of the water I snagged. Eventually I was able to find a good weight for my flies and landed a number of wild browns. This was also the maiden voyage for my new @fishpondusa pack and backpack. This is a local variation of a muddler that does just fine on lakers and brook trout. It is also the 50th one I tied for a local angler who doesn’t fly fish. He just runs them behind a spoon for lakers and does quite well. He orders 50 or so every couple of years.
