FAZ cover story about jewelry, generations and the relationships we have as women with ourselves and with our jewelry. First time cover for a German publication and couldn’t be happier to have it lensed by @juliavonderheide one of my new unexpected friends (see one of my last posts about this term I use 😂). This is our third time working together and it was with certainty that we would be making beautiful images together. When Julia first mentioned this editorial, we spoke a lot about being women in the fashion industry and about finding our space within this industry. It’s also a story with a younger model, lovely Sien @sien_vandenbrande the “newbie” (as I like to sometimes call myself, but here I’m the “oldie” 😂) and this is just fine because as with life, we grow and it’s good to have other newbies, it means we’re evolving! We were both interviewed separately for this story and when I read the article (thank you google translate!) I was pleasantly surprised by how similar certain of our responses, about being in the industry as women, were. This reinforces my belief that no matter our ages and places in life, we are fundamentally the same, with our insecurities, our reactions to judgement and our own self-judgment. All of this does get better with time and that’s another advantage of being the “oldie” 😂 And I learned, we both prefer gold jewelry 😉💛 🙏🏼👏🏼 @fazmagazine for the opportunity to work on this amazing women led project! Manifesto, Me and my proud moment❣️ I was invited to be interviewed for Manifesto Magazine’s 100th anniversary issue. Manifesto is an English publication based in Hong Kong. To say it was an honour to be interviewed along side such illustrious asian personalities would be an understatement. My conversation with fashion editor, Madeleine Mak, who is also of Asian descent but from a different generation, was inspiring and thought provoking. I realise more and more that there is no right or wrong way to do life. Some of us have more freedom of choice on how we choose to live it, but ideally it should be lived free from judgement or codes; from society, those around us and most of all from ourselves - especially ones that dictate how we “should” age and how our bodies “should” look. I have always tried to choose nourishing my interior above all else and am a firm believer that when we are well within our skin, in our body and mind, then our true spirit comes out and this is what makes us uniquely beautiful! So this is one of my proud moments. This is where I would tell my four year old self, my teenaged self and the women from each of my last decades - that I am proud of her, that she was stronger than she sometimes thought and that she was right to trust her instincts and go towards the positive in life, even when not everyone understood, including herself. This industry has taught me many things; some of which are that I really love being around creatives and the creative process, that the more I let go - the more liberated and confident I become and that I love being where I am right now in my life - yes with my age and wrinkles! Coming into my light. It’s not enough to just wish or dream about it. It takes time, hard work and determination. I am a positive dreamer, I have always been a dreamer; when I was younger I always knew that my place was somewhere else. This characteristic kept me moving towards this place and along the way I found; a partner in love and life, three sons and people who have at times loved, supported and guided me. Now I am realising that this place I was searching for is in fact within this mind, body and soul that I carry. I have been travelling towards myself. I have found my place within myself, where at last I am comfortable and at peace. I can now look in the mirror at myself without judgement but with acceptance and this is beautiful. This is me, all the facets of me and it’s okay if not everyone agrees or likes. I like who I am and I like this house of mine. I met Kati Chitrakorn early February, not long after I arrived for my first NY Fashion week. To be honest I initially did not understand why I was asked to be interviewed for the Financial Times. Oookaay, yes the request came in when I was preparing for my few weeks away from Paris and yes I’ll admit for a moment I didn’t completely put together the weekend edition and it’s cultural supplement…my bad, but It’s the FT for f#%k& sake and it threw me off - it could happen to anyone 😂😵💫🙃 I was particularly pleased when I learned that Kati was a woman of Asian descent. It was a detail that struck a chord within me. Growing up in a foreign country surrounded by people who didn’t look like me and not having access to role models in magazines who resembled or represented me physically (remember social media did not exist then 😱), made me doubt my self worth. This representation would have helped me enormously during my formative years of searching who I wanted to become. Now I know that it’s not about fitting in, but finding and making your own place on this journey. It’s about being your true unique self at all ages in life! I really believe that representation matters and that this will help to chip away little by little the stigmas and standards that exists but realistically should not be applied to all. Where then would the beauty of being unique be? “That’s one of the reasons why I agreed to this new part of my life. ZIMMERMAN FW24 Front Row - For my last Front Row of this fashion week season I was invited to the beautiful @zimmermann show. I’m not a big print kinda girl, but this dress was calling out to me during my fitting and I feel like it’s a good match. VOGUE FRANCE - Mères Modèles or Model Moms. Four women who work in the fashion industry, who are all moms and one who also happens to be a grandmother - ta da…me. For those of you wondering, as I did, why they chose me to be a part of this editorial, well…you do know that to be a grandmother usually you need to be a mother first 😂 although I do know some pretty fabulous women in my life, who are in heart and soul wonderful mother and grandmother figures. Just not biologically, but that’s another conversation ❤️ One of the questions that was asked for this editorial was how do you reconcile your role as a grandmother and your work. One of the main aspects of my work is modelling, which when you take the definition of this word is also the person or thing that serves as a model or role model/example. To be honest I hesitated a little before accepting this offer. It was not so much about my age or being a grandmother, but more about the perception and the fear of people only seeing that aspect of myself. I realized that this cultural and societal norm was lingering within me, that grandmothers should look and behave a certain way. So I guess the reason why I said yes is because I want to be the model/example that shows, No we don’t have to fit into the box. I am not defined by one aspect of my past or my present life. I am a multi-faceted person who is still learning and discovering all the different layers and facets within myself. Perfection is overrated, for me it doesn’t and shouldn’t exist! All we can do is just try to be better! Practice makes better not perfect! ROBERT WUN Haute Couture SS24 - I discovered Robert Wun last year as we were both featured in an issue of Tatler Hong Kong, the city of both our origins. I wore an incredibly easy to wear gown (sitting down, getting up etc) in spite of my initial “oh wow” moment upon seeing the chest (metal wire) and back (corset) 😂. This year I’ve been invited more as a guest to shows and events. I quite like this side of the industry as I do enjoy meeting and speaking with interesting people. I’m not so sure of the “influencing” side though as I don’t believe one should dictate what people should wear on their body or face or put in their body or mind. I don’t consider myself an expert on much, except my own life experiences and my knowledge from my trials and errors. One thing I do know is that I am fortunate to be able to work in this industry and to have the life I had and have. Apparently 2024 is an 8 year in numerology. I’ve decided that yes I agree with some of the points; Seven (year 2023) was all about introspection and curiosity (yes I did a LOT of that!) Eight takes that inner work and projects it outward. Eight is all about balance too. The symmetrical shape represents a link between beginning and end, and how nothing is ever really over. (This I totally agree with - nothing is really over until it’s over! 🙃😉) Some of you may or may not believe and that’s ok. I’ve also decided that I can take what I need and leave the rest aside and that’s ok too. I will also quote Richard Dawkins: “By all means let’s be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out” 🤔😉🤓😂❤️ One thing I try never to do is take for granted how fortunate I am to be able to work in this industry and in life in general.
