Pilsner with Style!🍺🤵🏽 • 95% of all beer brewed today is a golden (blonde) lager, an imitation of, and synonymous with Pilsner. Pilsner style lager, originally from Czech Republic (Bohemia), and brewed by a Bavarian (German) Brewer, was the worlds first golden lager. Glass Wear. Glassware. • They say presentation is everything and there is a lot of truth to that, especially as it applies to what we eat and drink. In my opinion, utilizing proper glassware enhances a craft beer experience, although not required to enjoy a cold one. Regardless of your preference, glassware shapes our sensory perception and creates a preconceived notion of what it is we are about to drink, both positively and negatively. As @beerpairedlife always says; #beerpsychology is totally a thing. • Beer-drinking vessels come in all shapes and sizes and can bring-out the subtle or vibrant visual characteristics of beer including color, clarity, opaqueness, head (foam), and bubbles (carbonation). Just as sunglass can enhance ones appearance, beer-drinking vessels can make a beer more enticing. • This Modern Times glass is a variation of a Tulip Glass or Stemmed Tulip (without the stem (handle) and footed base). The Tulip Glass originates from Belgian and was designed for highly effervescent Belgian Ales, although they are suitable for many other beer styles as well. The bulbous base captures and enhances the aromatic compounds emerging from the beer, and also allows for swirling of the beer to further release those aromatics. The thinly, flared lip supports head retention while allowing the beer and foam to be presented to the pallet simultaneously. • The Belgian-style Tulip glass is currently my favorite beer glass. What do you do when you achieve a goal? Set another goal! • This is a candid photo my wife took of me, poolside, studying for the Certified Cicerone exam while on our weekend getaway to #downtownla last summer. • I remember the overwhelming feeling when I decided to pursue the goal of becoming a Certified Cicerone. To me, it was a hefty pursuit and a steep learning curve. I knew almost nothing about beer before I began studying for the exam. • As I began my craft beer journey, it was extremely intimidating! The industry was very foreign to me and I felt as though I didn’t have much in common with anyone, I felt like a fish out of water. I didn’t know anyone in the industry, I didn’t hang-out at breweries, and I didn’t even know the distinction between an Ale and a Lager. I just knew that I enjoyed craft beer and I was intrigued by the craft beer culture. • As intimidated as I was, I kept my head down and studied my butt off. I bought books, made flash cards, made spreadsheets, enrolled in UCSD’s Certificate of Professional Brewing Program, found a mentor, and stayed focus. I bought a lot of beer, and poured a lot of beer down the drain. Although I failed the test the first time, I wasn’t discouraged. I sharpened my skills and passed it the 2nd time! • I’ve since made a ton of friends, visited some of the most amazing breweries across the United States, met Authors, Master Cicerone’s, Head Brewers, Home Brewers, and even joined the @ocbrewersguild. I can truly say that, the craft beer industry has some of the nicest, most creative, and hard working people I’ve ever met. It’s an honor to be a part of this movement, even in a small way. • So what’s next? Who knows? Stay tuned!🍻 #tacosandcoldones #cicerone #flashbackfriday

All the colors! A beer flight is a great way to expand your palate and learn to appreciate multiple beer styles. When I began studying for the Certified Cicerone exam, I was very challenged with trying new beer styles. I’m a creature of habit and always gravitated toward my “favorite” beer style, or two. If I wanted to pass the exam, that was no longer an option. I reluctantly began stepping outside of my comfort zone and trying beers that, visually, didn’t look appealing to me because of their color. What I’ve learned is that those false preconceived notions were barriers to me enjoying new and interesting beer styles. • From left to right: American Stout: Notes of roasted coffee bean, dark/bitter chocolate, slight burnt notes, medium/full body, medium/high carbonation. • American Brown Ale: Moderately High malty-sweet notes of chocolate, caramel, nutty, toasty. Light to moderate tropical hop flavors. Medium/full body, medium-high carbonation. • American IPA: Pronounced bitterness, medium to high hop flavors of citrus, piney, tropical fruit, stone fruit. If you ask her, she’ll tell you that she knew within 10 minutes that she was sitting across from her future husband. 10 months later I proposed and we married 6 months after that.
