Anthony Provenzano (1917-1988) Genovese Capo Anthony Provenzano, also known as Tony Pro, was a caporegime of the Genovese crime family in New Jersey. Provenzano was well-known for his collaborations with Teamsters Union director Jimmy Hoffa as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters president for Local 560 in Union City, New Jersey. Tony Pro oversaw the bookmaking, numbers, and loan sharking practices of his business agents and shop stewards. Perhaps more lucrative was the theft of cargoes being trucked through New Jersey, which was popular and often visible. No shipment could be considered "safe" without Tony Pro's approval, and the price was not cheap. Provenzano's successful indictment and conviction for extorting $17,000 from a trucking company in 1966 is a proof of this. Jimmy Hoffa was sentenced at the same time and in the same jail. When Pro learned that he would no longer be eligible for his Teamsters pension while in prison, their relationship deteriorated. Tony Pro is said to have played a role in Jimmy Hoffa's 1975 disappearance. In 1978, Pro was convicted of ordering the assassination of Anthony Castellito, the secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 560, in 1961. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder. A month after obtaining the sentence, Pro was sentenced to four years in prison for arranging kickbacks on a $2.3 million pension-fund loan. He was found guilty of labor racketeering a year later and sentenced to another 20 years in prison. Pro died in prison in 1988 at the age of 71. Henry Hill (1943-2012) Lucchese Associate Being half Irish, Hill never became a made man, but his charisma and cunning earned him a place within the Lucchese crime family where he became an associate and friend of Paul Vario, a highly respected Capo Hill started out doing errands for Vario and his crew when he was a teenager, and he then went on to more serious crimes. His involvement with the Mafia lasted three decades, starting in 1955. Hill was involved in a $420,000 robbery of an Air France cargo terminal at JFK in 1967. That robbery, he told biographer Nicholas Pileggi for the book "Wiseguy," on which GoodFellas was based, earned him big points with the mafia's upper-levels. Then there was the Lufthansa heist. Hill had received word that the German airline would be sending a large amount of cash to the New York airport. What they expected to be a $2 million haul turned out to be a $5 million haul, with an additional $850,000 in jewelry thrown in for good measure. Th translates to more than $23 million in today's money. It was the largest heist in American history at the time, inspiring a major FBI investigation and decades of books and movies — Hill was played by Ray Liotta in GoodFellas. The heist also made international news because of how little the police knew about it. It remained that way for a long time, in part because the majority of those involved in the high-stakes robbery were killed shortly after. Hill was sentenced to ten years in prison for assaulting a non-paying gambler whose sister happened to work for the F.B.I. He became an informant after his release, and his testimony helped bring down some of New York's most notorious mobsters, including Vario. Thomas DeSimone (1950-1979) Lucchese Associate DeSimone worked with Jimmy Burke and Henry Hill under the mafia capo Paul Vario. He was involved in truck hijacking, robbing, extorting, fraud and assassination. He was well-known for his ferocious temper. When he started losing at pinochle, he would throw darts at the other players. "It didn't take anything for this guy to kill you," Hill said of DeSimone, a "pure psychopath". Tommy committed his first murder when he was 17 years old, according to Hill. DeSimone assassinated a random stranger named Howard Goldstein while he was walking down the street. DeSimone also murdered Gambino family member William “Billy Batts” Bentvena in 1970 because Batts made a “snide remark” about DeSimone shining shoes. DeSimone was accused of taking part in the Lufthansa heist at JFK Airport in December 1978, which was the largest robbery in US history at the time. The loot is said to have totaled nearly $6,000,000, of which only a small portion was recovered. DeSimone also helped with the cleanup and did the "job" on Parnell "Stacks" Edwards for forgetting to ditch the truck from the Lufthansa heist. At least 16 members of the original crew went missing or were found dead. According to "Wise Guy" and "Goodfellas," Tommy DeSimone was probably whacked by the Gotti crew for murdering "Billy Batts" Bentvena during his "welcome home" party, but he appears to have been a victim of the Lufthansa curse. According to rumors, Tommy DeSimone was dismembered with a chainsaw and dumped into the Atlantic Ocean following the heist. Until today his disapperence remains a mystery. Jimmy Burke (1931-1996) Irish Gangster James Burke, born in New York, was a Lucchese family associate. He owned "Robert's Lounge," a bar in Queens' South Ozone Park - an ideal setting for a game of cards and a convenient burial ground for guys who didn't pay up. Burke's money was laundered by Moo Moo Vedda's, a dress factory. Then there was the Lufthansa Heist, with $6 million in cash and jewels hidden in Building 261 of the Lufthansa freight terminal at Kennedy Airport. On December 11, 1978. Jimmy's son, Frank, was behind the wheel of the crash vehicle. Burke's crew kept the cargo staff at gunpoint, handcuffed them, and locked them in the lunch room. He took their wallets and threatened to kill their families if they did not follow his orders. They loaded cash and jewelry into a van and unloaded it in Canarsie. The van was smashed, and the take was nearly $6 million. The money was divided among Burke, his crew, and the Gambino and Lucchese families, but some crew members say Burke did not contribute his full share. Burke was terrified by all the publicity and went on a shooting spree to keep his crew members from leaking information to the authorities. Burke's son, Frank James Burke, Thomas DeSimone, Henry Hill, and Angelo Sepe were the only involved robbers to survive Burke's deadly spree following the Lufthansa Heist. Henry Hill ratted out on Jimmy, and on April 1, 1980, Burke was arrested. Burke was accused of killing over 50 people. He had just been found guilty of one murder. On the plane to Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, New York, Burke pointed to JFK airport and told the police, "It was all mine." Burke died on April 13, 1996, of lung cancer. They haven't found any of the money from the Lufthansa heist yet. Joe Lombardo (1929-2019) Alleged Consigliere Joseph Lombardo was known as "Joey the Clown", a high-ranking member of the Chicago's Outfit crime syndicate. He came from a big family of nearly a dozen children and was a feared Grand Avenue fixture on Chicago's West Side for decades. He was dubbed "Joey the Clown" by the media for his courtroom stunts, which included draping a newspaper over his face with eyehole cutouts and a hole for his lit cigarette. He rose to the top of the mob as a practise of skimming, fixing broken wages and rigging casinos. In organized crime circles, Lombardo was more commonly known as "Lumpy" for administering beatings that resulted in epidermis lumps on the recipient. During his criminal career that spanned more than seven decades, he also went by the names Joe Padula and Joe Cuneo. During a mob trial in Kansas City in the early 1980s, Lombardo received a 15-year sentence for attempting to bribe a U.S. senator and a 10-year sentence for skimming $2 million in cash from a mobbed-up casino in Las Vegas.
