🐜 Ant Plants 🐜 "Ant plants" 🐜 are unusual epiphytic plants that have a unique relationship with species of ants. The plants form characteristic bulbous tuber-like structures with a network of chambers that provide a nesting space for species of ants. Ant plants grow on the trunks of trees in paperbark (Melaleuca) swamps, mangroves and rainforest in North Queensland. They are regarded as vulnerable species due to habitat loss (clearing of Melaleuca for development), invasive weeds, and removal of plants by plant collectors (and butterfly 🦋 collectors). All my ant plants have been propagated directly from seed from my own plants.
