The hot hatch lives! Worried that hot hatches are a dying breed? Fear not, for a new generation is on the horizon, and in this month’s issue of Top Gear magazine we’ve got the full lowdown on the Renault 5-based Alpine A290, as well as the Mini Cooper SE and the Volkswagen ID. The sharpest (and hottest) tool in the shed 🔥🗡️ Offering worry free reliability and blistering speed for now 15 generations, the Honda CBR-1000RR Fireblade has set the pace for superbikes over the last 32 years. Originally a 893cc bike breaking the new ground in terms of power and handling, decimating the 750cc competition back in 1992. By the 8th generation (2006-07) had become a 180mph weapon. An simple yet elegant design, updated with magnesium components to keep the weight down over the outgoing model, the 8th generation Fireblade (as well as the same year 600RR) became the first offered in the iconic Repsol racing livery from factory, making the few optioned with it incredibly desirable with modern day collectors. Despite now being a 17 year old frame, the 998cc, 16v inline 4 was updated with larger intake and exhaust valves to ensure the same level of performance with increased emissions regulations coming in. Producing a peak of 170bhp at 11,250rpm it remains incredibly potent by todays standards. Tipping the scales at a mere 170kg dry the Fireblade accomplishes a terrifying 1:1 power to weight ratio. Combine this with; a slick shifting 6 speed gearbox and an identical torque figure to even the most up to date Yamaha R1 (84.5lbft) and its appeal on the second hand market goes through the roof. Cherished for its softer and more comfortable riding position over its competitors and much more mid range power than the outgoing 7th generation the CBR remains a sharp tool for a skilled rider.
