Planning an elopement often looks like the beautiful cliffs of Big Sur, or the captivating views of the desert in Joshua Tree. Sometimes it is the crystal clear waters at South Lake Tahoe, the incredible architecture of San Francisco City Hall or the warm sandy beaches of Maui. But what if, it was the experience of the Northern California valley in Butte County? I imagine planning a local elopement for a couple where they begin the day with getting ready, doing a first look, and enjoying coffee in downtown Chico. Starting with some photos on the balcony at the historic @hoteldiamondchico followed by a day of adventuring at Upper Bidwell, Sterling City, Honeyrun, and Lake Oroville. Catching golden hour at North Table Mountain or Feather Falls. Maybe the elopement day is wrapped up with a campfire, wedding cake for two, and reading vows by firelight under the stars.✨ Perhaps the most magical thing about elopement’s isn’t the location, but the freedom to adventure and experience the intimacy of a wedding with just the two of you. This is one of my favorite images I’ve taken to date; both as a favorite in general and a favorite film image. I was working as a second photographer and was asked to go up to the balcony for the processional to grab shots of the bride from above. I had to walk through the bride’s room to get to this particular balcony, and I saw the door was open and the bride was there standing in the window. I quietly and discreetly grabbed a few shots with a couple different cameras. I think the image is beautiful, but I really love the story behind it! There is a peaceful stillness in the quiet… I remember this day well. It was an incredibly hot summer day and the bride had just finished getting ready. Everyone had left the room and it was just us, so I closed the curtains as the guests started taking their seats and we waited in the cool, dark room. We could hear the vent from the air conditioning and there was this still, calm feeling. She wasn’t nervous, she wasn’t anxious. She was happy and calm.
