When is a thermos, not a Thermos? Well, only a Thermos Brand vacuumware bottle is actually a “thermos” in Canada, but not in the US… The “vacuum flask” was invented by Sir James Dewar in 1892 for storing liquified gases. In 1903, German glass blower Reinhold Burger obtained a German patent for the vacuum flask for general use. He registered the trademark "Thermos" the following year. in 1906 William B. Walker learned of the “Thermos” brand bottle and created the Thermos Bottle Company in the US. In 1907, the Canadian Thermos Bottle Co, Ltd was incorporated in Montreal by American Charles Reid. He was arrested in 1909, alleged to have received investments in the company under false pretenses. He was acquitted, but a short time later a group of Canadian businessmen purchased the company and moved it to Toronto. In 1914, the US company purchased the German, British and Canadian ones, making them subsidiaries of the new American Thermos Bottle Company. The Canadian company became simply the Thermos Bottle Company, Limited. The US company purchased several competitors along the way and in 1956 was renamed American Thermos Products Company, while the Canadian subsidiary became Canadian Thermos Products Limited. The US parent became King-Seeley Thermos Company, following a merger with the camping and outdoor company. The US Thermos bottle operation became a division of the parent company, and the King-Seeley name was used on their Thermos bottles. The King-Seeley name was not used in Canada. In 1958, Aladdin Industries in the US decided to use the term “thermos bottles” and was sued by American Thermos for trademark infringement. In 1962, the US Superior Court ruled that “thermos” had become a generic term. Aladdin was allowed to use the term “thermos” in all lowercase, but only Thermos could capitalize it. In 1964, Aladdin Industries Products of Canada Ltd applied to have the Thermos trademark removed from the Canadian register, citing the generic use of the term. The case was settled in 1969, when the Exchequer Court dismissed the claim, stating that the “thermos" name could not be used by competitors of Thermos. Continued in comments...

Here’s a little smooth jazz for your Saturday morning with a few of my favorite green things! Wanted to show off a couple of my rarer vintage pieces - the green plaid thermos for one - you never see this pattern - it came from Australia. The Edgemont tin is usually in green and cream - not all green like this one. And isn’t the lime green and navy Blue Ribbon potato chip tin a beauty! The striped cardboard container up top holds a quart fruit jar and is made by Pic Nic Pal - Says it will keep cold or hot for hours. And I recently showed you the pretty Chinese aluminum thermos (flask as they call it). My vintage green scale is made by Pelouze. And aren’t my tin salt and pepper shakers in the basket cute?! Happy Thermos Thursday! Sharing some of my favorite coolers and jugs here. One of my first cooler purchases was the 1940’s Coca Cola Pic-Nic ice chest. That thing is heavy - you’d have to be a bodybuilder to carry it full of ice and drinks. Same thing for the Fiesta ice chest! The tall plaid one on left is also a cooler. Mix them with some cool thermos jugs and you can’t help but fall in love! So much nostalgia for me here - especially with that top cooler. It’s up into the 50’s here today so may try to go to grandson’s soccer game. I’ve been missing out due to falling accident with dislocated shoulder. Happy Thermos Thursday! Some interesting info about the thermos on the right ~ on the bottom of the thermos it says: Sold only at Rexall Drug Stores. The front says CAL 0 REX. We found it a few years ago with an identical thermos and an unmarked blue rectangular lunch tin inside the navy blue leather bag in back. Also interesting (at least to me) is the Kensington vacuum bottle with the paper label is made in Japan and has a cork stopper. The smallest thermos in middle is a Boots made in England, and the one with gold is Holiday made by Thermos Limited England. • 🎄 • GIVEAWAY • 🎄 • But; first, in the name of authenticity and transparency, please tell me that I'm not the only one having to actively practice the art of "Present [Pun intended!] over Perfect" this Christmas? Please tell me, too, that I'm not the only one, who, when life feels, and is, out of control, tends to become focused on the things that don't matter, instead of the things that do! Ex. All I can see when I look at this pretty enough picture is that the ribbon on the gift front and center isn't ... centered! Normally; I wouldn't care, but because life is having its way with me; I do! My [bio] dad is dying. Literally, just weeks after being cleared from his third bout with colon cancer, he was diagnosed with end stage pancreatic cancer. Last week, he didn't recognize me and this week, he has progressed to the "Terminal Lucidity" phase and is ordering plants from Mexico! Last week, I spoon fed him and today he ordered himself lunch via uber eats! And; for the last eight weeks, I have been going through the extremely painful process, and recovery, from having the secondary and feeder veins in both the front and back of both of my legs sealed permanently shut, leaving just the main artery flowing, in an attempt to lessen the debilitating pain I live with due to a genetic clotting mutation and severe vein damage. Yesterday, I found out that the procedure on my right leg was 100% successful, but that due to the severity of the damage in my left leg, the procedure was only successful from my groin to behind my knee. Despite my trusted surgeon's very best efforts, that procedure, in my mind, was unsuccessful and I left his office flushed and heartbroken. Uncentered. But ... I was wrong! The procedures, while not "perfected" WERE successful and under the pretty paper and wonky off-centered ribbon is a gift thoughtfully chosen for someone I adore and it was wrapped with care, joy and love and to deem that anything less than, not just successful but, perfect would be a mistake. So; I'm going to accept the wonky ribbon as is and I'm going to embrace my wonky self as I am, too! Perfection is over-rated, enough is understated!

Time to bring out my vintage child’s toboggan sled and a little history lesson. I’ve told this to you before, but for the newbies here it is again. Here in Texas I’ll be wearing my toboggan on my HEAD! What???!!! Is a toboggan a term for a sled or a hat? In the northern states it is usually referring to a sled with a curved end, while in the south a toboggan is usually referring to a hat - however there is a connection between the two. Toboggan is one of a vast array of words used to describe a knit hat. ... Because of the freezing conditions, toboggan sled riders often wore knit hats to keep warm. These hats soon became known as “toboggan hats,” but since at least 1929, that second word has been dropped. So if we ever get enough snow here, I’ll be riding down the hill on my toboggan while wearing a toboggan on my head to keep warm!!! Happy tobogganing!!! I love using sleds - I have many styles - all around the house at Christmas! This isn’t a Tonka but it sure is a cutie among a forest of thermoses! Did you ever chop down your own tree? I always thought it would be fun to do that but never got the opportunity. I do have fond memories of picking out our tree at the tree lot by our grocery store with my parents though. We couldn’t afford the really big ones, but it never stopped us from loving the tree we picked once we covered it in icicles and ornaments.
