Look! A colourful sunset in Mui Ne with some friends. We were sat here having some beers, sitting on top of this artificial thingy which I think might have been some sort of sewage drainpipe. The colours of the sky were particularly vivid this day, as you can see plainly. When the sun sank below the horizon, the stars were clear and plentiful in the sky above us. This spot was quite busy with people, mostly locals who seem to congregate during the colourful hours, but they all departed almost immediately when it became dark and we were the only ones around for a long time. I'm really stoked about these photos - sometimes everything just works out right and you get a dope shot. The clouds in the sky are wispy and sibylline, like something of a dream. You could imagine them having been conjured up, like from some magic summoning. The way they refract the yellow and pink of the sky is wonderful to me, complimented still by the ocean waves below. I'm reminded of the trails of smoke that billow from an incense stick, for some reason. The silhouette of the kites in the third photo, too, is striking to me, stark against the sky.
Look! A few photos from along the coastline north of Vinh Hy, in southern Vietnam. We did a road trip on our motorbikes last week down this coast. The scenes are beautiful- the ocean is impossibly blue, and many of the little towns hiding in the mountains along the coast are scenic and charming. The first photo shows a little fishing village situated on an island just off the shore- I really liked the moon in this picture, which is hanging just above in the sky. To the left of some of these images you can see the red stains of light leaks - i've still not sorted these out yet, and they've become more and more an issue recently with my photos. The roads here are windy, with good pavement, and not very much traffic at all. It was impossibly fun ripping and down them on my motorbike, stopping at each little viewpoint on the way and snapping a photograph. I've not enjoyed myself so much in a long time, I think, and I'm already brainstorming when and where to do it again.

Look! A few shots from around the lake in central Da Lat. The first picture shows the flowers of the weeping bottlebrush, Melaleuca viminalis, which is one of my favorite trees here - enough that I went and found out what it was, because I kept seeing them around and really liked their flowers. The leaves hang low like willows, and these flowers droop lazily in the breeze. They can be found all over the city, planted as a decorative urban tree - they're not native to here, but come from Australia, is what I gather. In the last photo, you can see one on the shore of the lake. It looks like it's been tacked with dozens of vibrant red pipe-cleaners. My camera has been having issues with light leaks again - for years, actually, my camera latch holding the film has been broken, and I've been holding it together with various forms of adhesive. The past few months it's gotten bad enough I am getting regular light leaks now, which somewhat worries me a little bit. Sometimes the splash of red looks cool with the photo, but often it doesn't. I've been trying to embrace it as an artistic accident when it occurs. Brian Eno said once to "honor thy mistake as intention", which is a line I think of quite often in my creative endeavors.

Look! The wind turbines of Cau Dat, not too far away from Da Lat. I can see this place from my balcony and have been looking at it for several months, and only just made the trip out here last week. It's a sprawling little area atop of some mountains, with fields of tea farms and several of these gargantuan wind turbines dotting the place. You can see for miles in most directions from up here. When I came out, it was a beautiful clear day - about the best weather you could ask for - and I spent a few hours ripping around the roads here on my bike taking photos. One of my favorite places by far in this area, I think. The wind turbines are a very recent development, based on what I can gather. They seem to have been commissioned in 2019, and were finished quite recently. Looking at the place on satellite view, you can see the turbines laid out on the ground in various stages of construction. News articles from only a year or two ago talk about them still being planned. I imagine they were built right before I arrived last year. This place is a popular area for cloud hunting as well, an endeavor I mean to try myself, but it's the wrong time of year right now. I'll have to return in a few months, I think.

Look! A sunset over the Tuyen Lam lake, just on the outskirts of Da Lat. I rip over here occasionally on my bike with my camera to see if the view is good for a photo, as it is only about five minutes from my house. This day, there were some nice clouds obscuring the sun right as it was starting to turn crimson. Its not all clouds, though - you can also see a plume of smoke from a fire in the hills. There are dozens of these fires every day, usually controlled, meant I guess to burn up old detritus before it could become a wildfire risk for the upcoming hot and dry season. I have gone on a few hikes in the woods recently, and the ground has been charred black all around from fires, just below the trees. The air quality here as of late has become quite smoky, as you can imagine. Seems you can't escape smog of some kind anywhere in this country. The last photo has a wedding couple in it. So many people come to this place to get married; it's the most popular wedding destination in Vietnam. I have counted innumerable wedding boutiques and galleries on the streets of this city. I always figured you would want your wedding photos with nobody else but you and your spouse in them, but often I see photoshoots in very crowded places, and sometimes even in the middle of the street as cars and bikes pass. They don't look very romantic, but what do I know. At least these people seemed to have figured something nice out with the cute boat situation they have. Apparently, there is a Da Lat curse, where if you go on a couple's holiday here as your first holiday together, you will break up. I have heard this from many, and even seen it happen - couples from Saigon have stayed for holiday at the cafe I live at and argued to separation right in front of me. I remember a young guy, who spoke English particularly well, pouring his heart out to me on the balcony in a drunken stupor lamenting about how awful everything was since he had broken up with his girlfriend that afternoon. I really, really, really, really, really did not want to be there but I felt bad, so I just stood there smoking cigarettes as he told me a bloated tale not unlike a bad teen romance novel.
