🧡 Baby Development Course 🧡 It’s Week 5 of our course and everyone was very busy is yesterday's session. We’ve enjoyed some active yoga (and gave our Mummies and Daddies a work out too! 😅) and learnt the second of our signing songs. It was fun to incorporate some props into our signing this week! We also had a bit of time left at the end to enjoy some of the sensory play bits left out from our DiscoveryTots class. We were even treated to some bubbles! I can’t believe next week is the final week of this Baby Development course. Time really does fly?! The next courses start in June and are already filling up. This week our sensory collection is our contrasts collection! Using contrasts in sensory play encourages babies to investigate and explore different concepts, so we aim to provide resources that offer contrasting experiences, like here with black and white 🖤🤍. Sensory play is a great way to teach your tot about contrasts and opposites. Touching a piece of velvet and then touching a piece of hessian sack would show them the difference between smooth and rough for example. Mouthing - Should I be worried about my baby putting everything in their mouth? In the first few months of life, the tongue has the highest concentration of nerve endings, so it is the most sensitive part of the body, and is always seeking input. Later the hands will take over as the most important source of learning, but not for several months yet. For babies, especially, to experience and truly understand an object they need to gather data - how it feels, the shape, size, weight, texture, smell, taste (and many more!). To do this they need to put it in their mouth. Sensory play encourages the development and integration of the senses through exploration and has a huge role to play in your child's physical, emotional and brain development 🧠 You can set up play experiences for your little one to explore the different properties of objects, highlighting opposites like textures (hard/soft) which will aid your child's awareness 🤩 after all, how can you know that something is soft until you have touched something hard? As you may now know, lots of little ones LOVE to make lots of noise 😁 At Tots Play we love music and the excitement it brings to those happy little faces! Here's how to make a Bottle Shaker at home. 💙You will need: A small plastic bottle with a screw top lid. (A small drink bottle works well as does a one pint plastic milk carton as it has a small handle, good for tiny fingers. Make sure the bottle is clean and dry before using.) Dried peas, rice, lentils, pasta or similar. Electrical Tape or similar. Stickers, sticky backed plastic, ribbons (optional). 🧡How to make it: Tip the dried peas or rice or whatever you have chosen to use into the bottle until it is about a quarter full. Screw the lid on to the bottle tightly, and secure with tape all the way around the lid. If you want to you can decorate the bottle with colourful stickers then wrap the bottle in clear, sticky backed plastic to secure them. You might also like to add ribbons to the neck of the bottle to make it even more fun and colourful 💙Vary the game Make more bottles filled with different items and talk about the different sounds they make. You could also make pairs of bottles with the same contents and see if your child can match the sounds, or simply let your child play with the different bottles and choose which interest them the most. 🧡Safety note Make sure the lid is secure and provide supervision when your child is playing. The contents may be a choking hazard. As they get a little older allow them to lead the play experience and pursue the play opportunities they want to. Allowing them this freedom means that they will engage more readily in the activities, their natural sense of curiosity will motivate their learning and give them a healthy appetite for it. To get the most out of these experiences for their language development, be sure to talk to them through the entire process. Our training includes why baby massage is so beneficial for your baby (and you!), as well as how to teach you the different strokes, which yoga poses will calm and which will energize your new crawler, and how to engage them by adding music to your play, how sign language promotes bonding and speech development as well as the key signs to get you started, and what kind of sensory resources will bring your little one the most developmental benefits (rather than just give the best photo opportunities!) - and lots more! And our training is not just about the babies, we also focus on how to support you as a parent as you navigate your way through this early stage of your parenting journey. Classes are always lively and fun - BUT behind all that fun is the serious business of your child learning and developing every day and my role is to support that by showing you tried and tested ways to encourage your baby’s development, which is why we have such thorough training before delivering the classes to you. Simple Ways to Help your Child’s Language Development: 1️⃣ Music activates the same part of the brain where language develops. The patterns that we find in musical melodies can be found in language itself and teach young children the basics of auditory discrimination (discerning different sounds), and the repetition found in many songs helps them to remember the words and phrases before they can even form them. Most children's songs and nursery rhymes purposely include a strong rhythm and sections that rhyme, both of which help children learn the patterns and structures of language, even before they understand the individual words, so are a good choice to play or sing to or with your child, but a variety of different musical styles (or just your favourites from the radio) will all help with language development. At Tots Play we always include music and movement in our classes, and we love it when we start to see little ones getting excited knowing that their favourite Tots Play song is coming on!
