Ollech & Wajs has quite an impressive back catalog of tool watches — particularly around the 1960s. They were pioneers in direct-to-consumer mail-order and built quite a business selling to GIs at the PX during the Vietnam war. Navichron, Astrochron, Selectron, and the Caribbean Oceangraph are some of the more well-known models among enthusiasts. However, I have no idea what this one is. Some of its distinctive features include: a signed Landeron 149 movement, a signed Aquaplunge-style case, a bakelite insert, a milky grey dial, and radium lume — which is enough to at least place production in the mid-to-late sixties, but I have never seen any others like it. The community of O&W enthusiasts is relatively small so there isn’t much scholarship on many of their vintage references but hopefully more can be learned about this beauty one day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #divewatch #vintagedivewatch #vintagediverwatch #vintagewatch #vintagediver #orologio #reloj #coolvintagewatches #uhr #dailywatch #montres #ollechandwajsprecision #vintageollechwajs #ollechwajs #ollechandwajs #chronograph #vintagechronograph #radiumdial #watchoftheday #patinawatch #watchpatina #landeron149 #greydial #watcheswithpatina #bartonwatchbands #strapgame #watchmystery #watchmysteries #unsolvedwatchmysteries

Well, this one is a head scratcher… Found in France this solid gold Chronograph is signed Boucheron but has some random numbers and marks all over the case. The movement is a Venus based caliber signed Juvenia made for the French market. To me the watch looks like it’s from the 1940s but the movement appears to be from the 1950s…so what’s going on? Is it a project of some kind? Was the movement just replaced later? I’ve never seen a Boucheron Chronograph like this but what incentive would there be to fake an old Boucheron chronograph? All I do know is that it’s super cool and beautiful but the provenance is certainly puzzling…and I’m guessing I’ll never really know for sure. Any input is appreciated of course! Hope you enjoy the pics. #boucheron #vintageboucheron #boucheronwatch #vintagechronograph #vintagewatch #rosegold #pinkgold #madeinfrance #juvenia #venuschronograph #venusmovement #fabsuisse #rarevintagewatches #watchmysteries

Almost a year ago, I posted about an unsolved watch mystery regarding the Seiko Baby Panda 6138-8000; Why do we see so many Baby Pandas from 1971/1972 with the large-font sub-dials when these variants don’t even appear in the Seiko catalog until 1974? According to Sadao Ryugo’s research compiled in his book, The History of the Seiko Speed Timer, Seiko switches production from the small-font sub-dial Baby Pandas to the large-font as early as November 1971 (so, for some reason, Seiko continued featuring outdated photos of the earlier small-font sub-dial Baby Pandas in their catalog until 1974). Mystery solved. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But why do we never see 6138-8000 Baby Pandas stamped after 1972 even though they continue to be featured in Seiko’s catalog until 1975? Well, that appears to still be an unsolved mystery (so hit me up if you’ve ever seen one!). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Special thanks to @pippy for helping me research this. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #seiko #japanesewatch #vintagewatch #vintageseiko #vintagedesign #seikovintage #watchgeek #watchcollecting #watchphotography #japanesevintage #suwaseikosha #whitedial #watchfam #seiko6138 #seikopanda #chronograph #chrono #pandadial #columnwheel #verticalclutch #kanji #kanjidaywheel #seikosaturday #macrophotography #watchmacro #macrowatch #unsolvedwatchmysteries #watchmysteries #watchmystery

So, a quick update on this Fortis Marinemaster 8002: From last we left off, we learned this watch had identical twins from no less than 10 other brands. Since we also know watch brands of the era often sourced parts from the same suppliers, I hypothesized that a bunch of watch brands could have easily ordered this particular watch configuration from a parts catalog and just slapped their name on it. However, just a few days ago, @ollechandwajs published a fascinating story about “The Unofficial Watch of The Red Arrows from 1967-1970”; It turns out the watch they’re talking about is one of the identical twins to the Fortis (the only difference being the Ollech & Wajs branding). The story recounts a harrowing 10,000 mile aerial endurance rally in which two members of the RAF’s “Red Arrows” aerobatic team found themselves crash-landed on a remote tropic island on Christmas day 1969. I won’t spoil the story in this post so let’s just say a native of that tropic island may still be rocking a pretty cool chronograph on his wrist. One key detail to emerge from that story was that it was a UK-based watch importer called Chronosport that sponsored the Red Arrows — equipping them with these chronographs in exchange for some publicity. This is important because one of the other twin variants of this watch is also badged “Chronosport”. Is it possible that Ollech & Wajs manufactured all of these chronographs and allocated a portion of their production run for white-labeling and export to different markets under various brands? I’ve sent out some inquiries to Ollech & Wajs, Fortis, and to the grandson of the original owner of Chronosport (whom I managed to track down on LinkedIn!). Hopefully, this mystery will soon be solved. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ #fortismarinemaster #fortis #fortischronograph #vintagechronograph #lollipophand #patina #patinawatch #watcheswithpatina #yachtingwatch #yachtingchronograph #divewatch #vintagediver #watchgeek #watchcollector #blackdial #tritiumdial #regattachronograph #regattatimer #regatta #domedcrystal #watchfam #valjoux7733 #ollechandwajs #chronosport #redarrowsdisplayteam #raf #unsolvedwatchmysteries #watchmystery #watchmysteries

One of those interesting mysteries of the watch world. The Bulova ‘Royal Oak’. Genta did work at Bulova before he joined Audemars Piguet but most agree that he designed the iconic Royal Oak at AP. Bulova then created a ‘homage’ or simply copied Genta’s AP design? One thing I do know is that this model is a damn sight cheaper! #Watches #Watch #VintageWatch #VintageWatches #WatchFam #ClassicWatches #VintageWatch #WatchesOfInstagram #WatchAddict #Omega #Rolex #WatchCollector #WatchGeek #WatchNerd #WatchLover #Luxury #Vintage #newwatch #audemarspiguet #bulovaroyaloak #watchmysteries

. UPDATE: Sold for CHF 35,000 . People, help a newbie out. . Antiquorum HK, Nov 12 Lot 537. . Notes describe it as a RO 5402ST series A. But the AP logo is at 12:00. I thought on the A series the logo was at 6:00 (and that was the point of the 15202 - to be a modern replica). Same with lot 330. . I clearly missed something in the writing on RO - did some of the Series A have logo at 12:00? . Tagging some smart people who will know the answer. . Thanks! . #watches #watchauction #watchmysteries #vintagewatch #royaloak #seriesa #newbie #swisswatch #audmarspiguet #antiquorum @onlyvintageofficial @simoncudd @bobmaron @auctionlytics . . A rarer version of the already rare Heuer @audi Sport, with the slightly less busy hour, sub-dial. For a very short while in the 1980s, these were exclusively sold through Heuer UK or UK Audi dealers. They are also believed to have been gifted to Audi racing team members. Exact numbers are unknown, but it’s believed to be circa a couple of hundred pieces made in total. Powered by the Lemania 5100 - this has often perplexed collectors, as the 5100 usually works with a 24 hour register, but not with this watch. Apparently Lemania modified the 5100 to remove the function on some watches and this was one! #watchmysteries
