We have always recommended that it is in your best interest that you book with multiple seamstresses ahead of your event. Of course we want your business and know that you are the reason we can continue to operate but if you come to see us and choose to work with someone else, we don't want you to not have any other options with limited time ahead of your event date. This is why we don't guarantee availability until we see you and you decide to work with us. By having multiple seamstresses available, you can choose who works best with you and only at the cost of their consultation fee. Manitoba is rich with so many talented seamstresses, many of whom are our friends, so take the opportunity to reach out to as many as you can. We currently charge $60 for consultations but will be increasing it to $120 in the 2025 season. This fee covers the entire hour fitting where we go into detail about exactly how we can work with your dress to get the look you want and will still be waived if you choose to do your alterations with us. Knowing what you need done can be the biggest challenge so you will always leave us with the most pertinent information possible from our decades of experience. Slight deviation from our usual content, but I think this comparison highlights a principle you should always consider when undertaking major alterations to your gowns. Resizing your dress is not magic, so getting the fit just right will result in changes to where lines sit. You can see in this example how pinning the dress to compliment your figure has resulted in the back sitting slightly higher on the waist. It is certainly possible to resize it and redo the lines to end like they did, but it depends entirely on your preferences and priorities as it greatly increases the time spent on the dress. After we take all of your final photos, we get all of our brides to dance a little bit. It's become a fun tradition to mark the end of our time working together and makes for cute stories to post, but it also allows us to see how your dress looks in movement. There are no set rules for picking your dress with the simplest alterations in mind. The exact same dress could result in two completely different strategies for two different brides, but you generally want to start with a gown that you like the fit of around the waist and neckline. Usually, it is best if your dress is slightly larger rather than resizing it down several sizes, but sometimes we need to completely rework a dress just to take it in half an inch. We often get asked how the process of having your dress altered works so I thought it would be helpful to include the details in a post. Our preference is to have at least three fittings spread over at least 5 to 6 months leading up to your wedding but earlier is always better. There is no such thing as "too soon." The first fitting is our opportunity to meet you and see your dress in person. Once we can see it up close and understand how it was made and feel the materials used, we can explain to you the best way for us to work with it in order to get you the best fit possible. We want to do our best to work with your budget so we'll go over what services will be essential to get the most out of your dress and which ones are optional. Because of all that goes into this process, it really is impossible to provide quotes over the phone or via email. Your second fitting will be once we begin doing the major alterations to your dress. This is where we can see if we need any readjustments as your dress is taking shape. You'll be able to see what the final product will look like before we commit to anything permanent. We are very flexible during the whole process so we can add or remove services as we go. The final fitting is just a confirmation of everything we have decided beforehand and will be scheduled as close as we can to your wedding date so that you will have the best fit possible on your big day. It is very difficult to accommodate last minute changes, especially ones that require lots of rework to your dress at this point so it is important to use your previous fittings for those types of decisions.
